AMD remains on-track for Zen 4 and RDNA 3 in 2022, Ryzen 5000 G-Series soon

Will it be already DDR5 by the time Zen 4 is out?

Zen 3 / RDNA 2 kind of had hard time - because of chip shortages they were pretty hard to get. By the time shortages will get significantly better it will be already Zen 4 / RDNA 3 probably.

Though CPUs aren't that hard to get already, but GPUs are still very overpriced.

Frozenbyte are now telling Linux users to use Proton, even for their older games

Quoting: 1xokI think Ethan Lee and others are looking for new jobs. Just saying.
I don't think they should look at Frozenbyte then. I suppose making their own games is an option too if they want to stay in the gaming industry that is.

Quoting: GuestActually their statement is worse in my opinion: native or not, no support at all for running their games on GNU/Linux by any means. I doubt anyone can take a platform seriously if there's no support for it.
A depressing statement. Not that Trine3 ever ran (at all) for me, but Trine and Trine2 were great.

What makes this even worse is that Trine 4 is on Stadia.
I think they simply don't have Linux developers. So you should read their statement as "we'll hire some if Steam Deck will be a success". I suspect someone else did Stadia work for them.

The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

Quoting: GuestI believe even recent Intel iGPUs (and CPUs) require firmware blobs too. There's no real escaping them from any major vendor these days.
In theory, AMD could make a FOSS firmware, if it would be stripped of its DRM (i.e. HDCP) related bits. I don't think they have any ideological objections, it's more like "not worth the effort" type of issue I think from their perspective.

Baldur's Gate 3 is using Vulkan already, so they can make a native version with less hassle than others.

Sounds like an idea to propose to make a Plasma console, like they have Plasma mobile.

I'd be OK less with a manager and more simply with an OS UX for launching something from an existing launcher (like .desktop file you create yourself somehow). But that it would be easy to use with such controller setup.

By the way, speaking of the UI. Is there some FOSS console oriented GUI now? Let's say I want to play GOG games, itch games or whatever other games on it without using Steam. What are the options? Using KDE Plasma as is, while holding it like a console probably isn't a good idea.

I'm not a big fan of closed source UIs in general.

Quoting: EikeI wouldn't think so. Sounds like some extra complication. (Though I do think there will be a time when we'll wonder why not everything on a computer had variable refresh rate decades earlier. :D )
If anything variable refresh rate can reduce power consumption of the screen, so sounds like a good feature for a portable device, but it requires extra logic in the display controller. Question is, is anyone making them? Though given Valve are designing their own hardware (to some degree), they can simply make it happen.

Quoting: damarrinTo rain a little on everyone's parade (mine included), people on another gaming website I go to have been saying en masse how it's an instant Windows install for it to be even remotely useful. That's what the "general public" thinks, unfortunately :-(
I think realistically only a very tiny percentage of people are interested in installing OSes at all. And many of those who do, would prefer Linux. Regular user simply isn't interested or not even sure how to install an OS, no matter Linux or Windows. So I wouldn't worry about the above at all.

So if you want to analyze the "general public" - it's a major plus that device is coming with Linux preinstalled, because that's what they'll be using.
