Valve corrects the RAM specs for the Steam Deck, games should run nicely from SD Card

Quoting: EikeI wouldn't think so. Sounds like some extra complication. (Though I do think there will be a time when we'll wonder why not everything on a computer had variable refresh rate decades earlier. :D )
If anything variable refresh rate can reduce power consumption of the screen, so sounds like a good feature for a portable device, but it requires extra logic in the display controller. Question is, is anyone making them? Though given Valve are designing their own hardware (to some degree), they can simply make it happen.

Quoting: damarrinTo rain a little on everyone's parade (mine included), people on another gaming website I go to have been saying en masse how it's an instant Windows install for it to be even remotely useful. That's what the "general public" thinks, unfortunately :-(
I think realistically only a very tiny percentage of people are interested in installing OSes at all. And many of those who do, would prefer Linux. Regular user simply isn't interested or not even sure how to install an OS, no matter Linux or Windows. So I wouldn't worry about the above at all.

So if you want to analyze the "general public" - it's a major plus that device is coming with Linux preinstalled, because that's what they'll be using.

Do they expect there to be a shortage of these devices on the release day?

Quoting: damarrinUsing this for old games is really not the point, I think.
Why can't it be the point? As long as you can run something on it, someone will run it. And since it's not locked to Steam you can use GOG games, itch games and whatever. Something like OpenMW can work too.

Quoting: GuestOn a different note, what games would people think to play on this? It's not like most of the games in people's existing Steam library are designed for this form factor.
I want to load ScummVM on it.

I'd like some FOSS UI for it though. Is it using some custom Plasma or Steam's own UI?

Netflix is getting into video games, so we'll have another cloud gaming service

Does it have to be cloud based? They can simply act as a publisher and sell their games wherever (like GOG, Steam, etc.).
