The article has review-ish style to it which means that disclosure is pretty much required for transparency reasons. However, the affiliation was mentioned in the article so the article should be fine. And when I went through the article (had a relatively quick glance) it doesn't seem like an advert.
Space Colony From Firefly Studios May Come To Linux

Oh I remember this game, still have my boxed copy on the shelf. I remember making decent money from silicon mining and space tourism when I played this game. Hopefully I get to try it again natively on Linux someday. :)

Quoting: BumadarThe bit you said was asking Liam to apologize, which he did. He has sent a PM to the person in question and tweeted about it. Liam considered it settled and thus cleaned up the comment section. It could have been communicated a bit better and probably should have been, but it is what it is. Hopefully we can avoid these types of situations in the future.Quoting: BumadarAnyways back to the subject, I don't see how this is all good. Biggest issue is that mods are not made by the developer like DLC is, so when a new version of a game comes out a mod might no longer work but yet you paid for it. An even better example is how Techland even stopped all possible modding for a while. What if certain game servers requires you to have the following 20 mods installed to log on ?Ummm I wrote a bit more then the above, are we now in the business of censorship because its something you did not like ? And there I thought I was being quiet neutral about it... sad
I do agree that there are some brilliant mods around, and the people who made these often end up working in the industry thanks to that mod.
I know that Valve/Steam are slowly becoming like gods here and yes they did and do a lot for Linux but the other places that sell the real DRM free stuff are left out as you can be pretty sure copying/downloading a steam paid mod no longer will work.
If the 25% for modder en 75% for company is true then basicly its just another way for the company to make extra money over the back of modders without having to do or promise anything for it.

Quoting: fleskI guess you are right. Nobody really knows what GG is all about these days, but I guess that's expected when dealing with leaderless hashtag campaigns. Maybe we should just focus on the topic at hand and steer away from GG for now? It tends to be an explosive topic.Quoting: SamsaiGG (or at least parts of it) are against corruption in games journalism and paid-for mods are hardly a journalism ethics issue.Neither is diversity in games or feminism in general, and yet that seems to be their main concerns.

Quoting: tuxisagamerI wonder how much overlap there are between the paid mod whiners and Gamergate. I bet quite a bit.Considering many GGers are old(er)-school PC gamers there's definitely some overlap. However, I think it's completely unrelated. GG (or at least parts of it) are against corruption in games journalism and paid-for mods are hardly a journalism ethics issue.
Demise Of Nations: Rome Enters Early Access, Free To Play Strategy Game For Linux

That free to play model sounds terrible. I don't usually play in multiplayer but I most definitely am not going to buy virtual in-game currency to do that. And having just one map to play on seems really cut down.

If you got it that cheap you probably bought a user sold key. And that's where G2A is the most shady. Some people actively seek out review keys and sell them in bulk on G2A and the likes. Since those keys are meant for game critics and YouTubers the resellers are actively stealing keys and thus stealing money from the devs. Those keys also cause problems for real gaming critics and YouTubers because game developers are trying to stop that from happening, which makes them more cautious to give out keys to people. Nowadays if we ask for keys we tend to have to go through a two-step verification process to verify to the devs that we are who we are saying we are.
For reference on stolen keys on G2A in particular, please check the following article:

General rule of thumb is if it seems too cheap then it probably is and you shouldn't touch it.

Sales Statistics For Linux Games From Different Developers, Part 4

Quoting: subI'm afraid the argumentation that 1-3 % is better than zero is not quite to the point. The devs here mostly said that they get back the money spent on Linux support from the Linux sales so, while most certainly not really all that profitable, it's for the most part self-sustaining. The question is if SteamOS fails, will the devs accept these rather minimal profits when compared to other platforms.
Well yes, it's more than zero. But from an economical POV we should be aware
that less developers will release Linux versions if the share is not improving significantly.
Even if you get the Linux binary "for free" because your engine supports that target,
it doesn't mean you won't need to invest into additional support due to platform specific issues.
That's additional money probably not even covered by the Linux sales.
So for now it seems lots of developers are fine with 1-3 % as they might consider it
a test bed for SteamMachines and build up the required know how.
But if - for some reasons - SteamMachines/SteamOS fail, I bet most of those developers
won't still invest into Linux for 1-3 %.
TL;DR
1-3 % seems to be fine for now, as developers might have high hopes in SteamOS/SteamMachines.
If they fail, 1-3 % simply aren't enough to keep the Linux train going (at least for AAA games).

It's a very nice game. In my opinion a good summary of it is that it does what some modern military shooters (like BF4) attempt to do, it just does it a lot better and from a top-down perspective.
