Great news! Glad I didn't jump the gun to buy it yet. I'm a bit worried about performance though.

Mesa 12 released, Vulkan for Intel, OpenGL 4.3 and more for open source graphics users

Quoting: subNow that Mesa has almost caught up, I expect Khronos to come up with OpenGL 4.6 soon.
Major new features incoming that will take 2 years to be properly supported by Mesa. :D

Doubt they get along well specifying 4.6 while Vulkan was just pushed out. Guess they still have a lot of work to do with Vulkan, even with the 1.0 spec out.

My bet is 4.6 will to some extend have spir-v support
That is correct. Khronos has its full attention to Vulkan ATM. There are a few ideas for GL mainly from nVidia but none else wants to focus on both GL and Vulkan at the same time. For now and the foreseeable future the focus is on Vulkan.

Things I feel Valve need to address to help SteamOS really be something fantastic
10 Jun 2016 at 9:24 pm UTC Likes: 5

SteamOS was and still is Valve's backup plan. If things with Windows store go south SteamOS will be a viable alternative for them.

There is no need for SteamOS/Linux to be perfect or shinny or with 100000 games. The only requirement is to appear as a good Windows alternative. I think Valve managed hit that goal already by
- porting their infrastructure (steam etc),
- with the excellent performance of their games,
- the fact that more engines support Linux now and
- finally with the push of a low level API (Vulkan).
Now SteamOS/Linux has almost all the infrastructure in place for a potential move.

To me SteamOS appears like a loaded gun pointing to M$. I wish it was something more and I think Valve genuinely tried to grow the user base but it didn't quite worked out.

Unity3D has plans to support Vulkan in the next quarter

Quoting: neowiz73thank goodness for Android/Google pushing Vulkan because this will help the overall adoption of Vulkan into the mainstream.
can't wait to see ARK get a Vulkan update :D although it won't be anytime soon it would seem.
None should thank google for Vulkan. It's not a secret that they endorsed Vulkan quite late and that's because:
1. They realized that the alternative will cost them a few billions (in patents).
2. The alternative will cost in time (sort out patents).
3. The got pushed back by most GPU vendors.
I know what you're saying but you lost me at billions...

View video on youtube.com
Take a look at that (https://twitter.com/id_aa_carmack/status/575693181519429633?lang=en) to understand the "alternative" I was talking about. Khronos (among other things) has a patent sharing mechanism amongst the Khronos members. Some of those patents date almost 20 years. As you might imagine that pool of patents is quite big. If someone wants to go solo will have to go through them and license the relevant ones. This process affects multiple companies and multiple patents and that's expensive.

So when I say billions I don't exaggerate so limit the sarcasm to your friends.

Vulkan support for Dota 2 to come next week
19 May 2016 at 9:14 am UTC

I think DOTA 2 with Vulkan is a very important milestone. The most important aspect lies in the technical details of this achievement. I believe that Valve mentioned that DOTA 2 was (for the most part) GPU bound. The superiority of Vulkan in CPU bound scenarios is pretty much guaranteed so it will be extremely interesting to measure the performance in a GPU bound scenario. If Vulkan's performance is equal or better than GL then this will mark a big win for Vulkan.

Alien: Isolation Released For Linux, Prepare Your Spare Pants, Port Report, Review & Sale

Bought it and played it using a nVidia 760 4GB at 1400p and everything maxed out (except multi-sampling). It plays flawlessly and looks amazing.

Dying Light: The Following Announced, A Story-focused DLC To Come
13 Aug 2015 at 2:40 pm UTC

I agree that the performance is not ideal. It seems that decreasing the resolution makes no (noticeable) difference so the game must be vertex or CPU bound or there is a weird dependency issue (or maybe something else?). I hope they will invest some more time to fix it.

Homefront: The Revolution Still Coming To Linux, New Trailer & Details Emerge

The original Homefront was a CoD wannabe. Linear and unmemorable levels, mediocre shooting and rigged with clichés. Note that I never played the multiplayer.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Released For Linux, We Love You Feral Interactive

Played it as well. The port seems excellent! One problem that I noticed is that the terrain texture gets a bit too "colourful" on thunder lighting.
