I remember people expressing their criticism when they saw the Steam Deck: "it's a frying pan, it's always overheating, it's too expensive, it doesn't have any games, ...". And I can understand why: the only term of comparison these people had was the Nintendo Switch. Then Steam Deck was a discrete success. It couldn't place the same number of units of Nintendo Switch, but it went sold-out several times, despite being an old hardware when it got released.

The lesson of this story is that many people cannot envision something different than what they have experienced (or have been fed) so far. With the Steam Machine it's exactly the same script: people complaining and comparing it with the PS5 or (even worse) with PS5 Pro. And then we don't know: it might even be a silent success, by compelling to a set of customers we cannot identify yet at the moment. Who can say that?

I tried Proton Hotfix, but I get no audio in the game. GE-Proton 10.0-34 gives me still significant stuttering in game (so much so it's unplayable with fast cars). I would have to try the "horrible workarounds" [External Link].

I will easily sound unpopular, but I don’t think it is a good strategy. It doesn't matter if the “Protect the children” statement is genuine or pure gaslighting. What counts is that it is an easy win for politicians, and if SKG ties up against age verification laws, the risk is that it could lose support of those politicians who have expressed their interest in it.

Think about it: SKG could risk to be ruled out by those politicians who are endorsing the Online Safety initiatives. If these MEPs are put in the position to choose between “Protect the Games” or “Protect the Children”, there is no way they will choose the former, because the latter is an easier reputational win.

It’s a matter of strategy: you should take a little battle at time, because the moment you are clubbing battles together, you are just increasing the probability of losing all of them together.

It makes sense if you consider that Americans BigTechs (Apple, Google and Microsoft) are trying to lobbying all the Governments worldwide for their anti-competitive practices.

Since Apple and Google convinced the whole world that "app stores" are the only way to install software, that means according to politicians, every computer must verify age. For the app store that everyone must be using.

An app store is an anti-competitive moat, designed to use censorship to optimize the profits of a company. The government has now enshrined into law a protection for these quasi-monopolies. Of course "they're not a monopoly" because "there are two companies". But we didn't used to need app stores at all. Computers used to allow anyone to install and run anything they wanted. Not anymore though. You will only do what The Companies allow you to, because Profits.

And that was the only sensible comment I spotted on that thread. I would just add Microsoft to the list, as they are still trying to enforce their ecosystem (failing repeatedly of course, but still trying).

I'm fine with that, although I agree that this is not the best solution ever.

Best one IMHO would be to have a 2FA Web app under the gov.uk domain. This could be then consumed as a standard by all the services and websites who sell mature content.
