The Linux GOTY Award 2019 is now open for voting

Defend the Keep is the only game I purchased in 2019 that was actually released in 2019. So I won't be voting in most of the categories.

Descent 3 returns to Linux (and macOS) with an official modern port
2 Feb 2020 at 12:17 am UTC

Already had it. Steam is telling me it's a 977MB install? Still? Even after the full port?

Also, any chance Freespace 1&2 are next?

WooHoo! My system is changing! My cars cost me an unexpected $2000 last fall, which was my entire budget for a Ryzen 3900X/32GBDDR4/x570 Strix-E/5700XT with a 1440p montior to follow. Instead it's a Ryzen 2600/Asrock x570 Phantom gaming/16gb/ and my current gtx1060 carried over along with my 1080p TV. But, hey, First new cpu/mobo/ram in eight years. The Asrock will upgrade just fine one part at a time over the next year or so.

But hey, I need the money for the Bitchute/Youtube channel. Gonna rebuild my small delta 3D printer into a larger CR10 config, then use that to build a 3ftx5ft CNC gantry router. From there I've got a bunch of projects lined up that are all going to cost me hundreds of dollars each(in addition to the camera). Hoping to get Subscribestar support. Here's hoping.

Need a distraction-free art application on Linux? Try out MyPaint

Quoting: ShmerlFor drawing, try Krita. It's a lot better than Gimp for that. The later is a good raster image processing editor.
So where does Inkscape come into all this?
Inkscape has several uses for hobby CNC machining applications. I'm sure it has art uses, but what I care about is 2.5D machining and the gear generator plugin.

RetroArch to have the emulation 'Cores' as DLC when it releases on Steam, plus big updates

Quoting: Code ArtisanNintendo will probably send a cease-and-desist to Valve.
They can send a letter. It doesn't mean that Valve is required to care, because Valve has it's own legal department. I'm betting that department has said this situation is cut and dried, as long as Valve does not host the games themselves Valve is in the clear. Those games are thirty year old abandonware, so they should either leave everyone alone or do like Sega and put them up on Steam to sell all over again to new generations. Or even better, open source them so the games themselves can be updated for new hardware by volunteers.

Feral Interactive are asking what you want ported to Linux again
14 Jan 2020 at 1:21 pm UTC

Off the top of my head:

1:Batman Arkham series
2: Red Dead Redemption series
3: FFX/X-2
Honorable mention: Far Cry series

But not to fear, this is Feral Interactive, so I'm sure there's another TotalWar or Tomb Raider title they can bring instead. Honestly, I'd rather that they negotiate to port their entire MacOS catalog over to Linux than they look for anything new.

Mike Shapiro drops a cryptic message from G-Man for the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx

Quoting: WorMzyI was excited for Alyx, until it was confirmed that it is a VR exclusive. Hopefully poor sales will prompt them to revise that decision and release a more accessible version of the game.
Don't hold your breath. I think that it is glaringly obvious now that there is no grand plan for the narrative in the Half Life series. Valve uses the series as a way to push some innovation that they believe to be key.The first game gave us in game scripted sequences as a cheat to avoid having to sink a ton of work into really good AI, and it worked beautifully. Half Life 2 gave us a new digital delivery system that nobody in 2004 would have signed onto without a new Half Life game attached to it. And now after a couple years floundering with no killer app for VR, Valve is going to try to introduce one. And if HL:Alyx is successful, HL3 will still not be made. However a bunch of other game devs will copy what Valve did which will increase Valve's VR sales.

A peek at how many of the most popular games on Steam support Linux, December 2019 edition

In ten years I believe that Linux as a whole can overtake Apple in userbase, and it will be directly attributable to two things - 1)Steamplay, and 2)Microsoft abusing their userbase. But it's completely long term.

Quoting: jarhead_hIs there something that you have to do special to get the Linux performance boost? Because I just fired it up and it's choking just as badly as the last time I ran it last year. At 1080p. With some settings turned down to medium.
No idea what your hardware is, but it works fine at 2560x1440 with all the settings turned up as high as they go on my nvidia 970.
I'm running a Phenom II 960T @ 3.7ghz constant, 16gb DDR3, a Samsung 860EVO, and a 6gb GTX1060. And turning half the settings to medium still leads to it choking. 4x anistropic with NO AA. I get that the CPU is going to be a bottleneck, but this is a Source game. I just played through HL2, EP1 with maxed out settings without any slowdown. So what gives?
