Grand Theft Auto V gets BattlEye anti-cheat, breaks online play on Steam Deck / Linux

From my testing [External Link] across various proton versions, looks like the latest R* launcher update always signs-in Linux users into offline mode. It now skips the first screen where you choose between story mode and online and just loads you directly into story mode, as long as you're using proton 9.0 or newer (8.0 throws an activation error and quits).

Quoting: Stellahttps://steamdeckhq.com/news/valve-rockstar-fix-gta-online-steam-deck/There are certainly changes being made. Unfortunately, it looks like they're just improving the user experience of being limited to story mode.
There may be some hope on the horizon after all

Damn. I have over 1500 hours in this game, the vast majority of it online. I've spent money on this for in-game currency. heck, I've bought this game for friends so they could join me (and have an excuse not to play other crap games like destiny).
All the mod menus online are definitely an issue. I greatly appreciated that they made most features available in public lobbies also available in private, friend-only sessions some months back. Made playing in online fun again. Prior to that I would frequently have to "lag" out into my own public session to play the game without getting stuck in a death loop from some modder (they would just teleport your character underwater as soon as you respawn, or spawn explosions to where you're at, or any number of things, making the game unplayable).
It's wishful thinking to believe that this will stop the mod menus being used online for more than a few days. Blocking linux users, however, will last as long as they don't enable proton support.
The *real* solution to their online cheater issues is proper server-side anticheat (i.e. ensuring that what the client tells the server is actually humanly possible, and doesn't F with other players), and fixing up their network connections so it's not a glaring vulnerability on everyone's systems (particularly on windows).

The theme rewrite sounds very fitting - it keeps true to the original, but has a fresh new experience even for those who played the original

If you played "Marble It Up!" (now "Marble It Up! Classic"), your save data might be in jeopardy!
My save data in Steam cloud for the original game was wiped out with this new release. Thankfully I still had the save data on my local steam deck in the compatdata folder. It is located here:
You'll need to move the save data from the original game compatdata folder (864060) (this is now used for Ultra) to the new game compatdata used for Classic: 1286120.
Classic does not appear to support cloud saves, so definitely backup your save data elsewhere to avoid accidental deletion. I recommend moving the save folder somewhere "safe" like your normal Documents folder, then symlinking it back to the proper location in the compatdata folder. That way if your compatdata folder gets reset, you won't lose the save data.

The modular Framework Laptop 16 opens up for pre-orders

AMD CPU + AMD GPU in a fully modular, repairable, upgradeable gaming laptop is huge. I've got my preorder in, but I'm really hoping that 3rd party mod developers can make a keyboard module with a trackpoint (especially now that it is separate from the rest of the palmrest). If they can't, that's the main thing I'll miss while using it (I'd be happy to purchase and/or help fund such an endeavor)
Goodbye to Roblox on Linux with their new anti-cheat and Wine blocking

I wonder how many of their players are in India, considering the mass exodus [External Link] from Windows happening there (down to 53% as of April). Roblox claims it is a "global platform that brings people together through play". Is more than 1/16th of the total world population (apparent Linux users in India alone) not enough to justify supporting the Linux platform?
(And yes, statcounter says "unknown" for what all the new devices have shifted to, however: we already know that they were planning [External Link] on dropping windows in favor of linux for government and educational institutions as of this January (and if it's what they're now teaching students on, presumably those same students would want that on their own systems) - it is probable that we're seeing the resulting shift in monthly snapshots...it's not far-fetched that statcounter doesn't support counting every single linux distribution as "linux")

The Last of Us on Steam Deck is not great

As far as shader compilation in concerned, isn't that something normally taken care of automatically on the Steam Deck due to Valve pre-compiling those specifically for Steam Deck users? Surprised that isn't currently another download.
Hopefully it's just short term fresh port issues that they can resolve soon.

it has the same issue some other bigger games have where the RAM will fill up to around 14/14.1GBSounds like something that would potentially be fixed by that RADV RAM usage bug.

Framework reveal new laptop with modular graphics, plus an AMD Ryzen model

Really looking forward to seeing the options for the new Framework 16 formfactor. The upgradeable discrete graphics sounds very promising, as well as the modular input system.
TBH, the only thing I'd missing from my current thinkpad is a trackpoint. I know the 13 formfactor had limitations in that regard that prevented any viable solutions for that, but I'm hoping that the new form factor can accommodate it.

That's not to say that the windows client has been perfect. It got substantially more resource demanding when it was updated to use dx11 instead of dx9. Thankfully it is substantially better than it was a year ago - it has since been refined and optimized enough to run quite well on the Steam Deck (I normally play it at 1080p 60fps) and it is Steam Deck Verified.
FYI: RL at this point does not use Easy Anti-cheat, which is something I'm very happy about. One less thing to worry about potentially breaking the game for us Linux users.

Quoting: BigRob029This sounds like it could be a win for Linux gamers in the future. Or at least a small win for Linux gamers with friends that play on other operating systems. I'm worried that the linux versions of games we could have will end up functionally nerfed like Rocket League. As an avid RL player, I can tell you that the windows version through proton (or wine if you're playing it through the epic store) is not limited in any way. The native Linux and MacOS clients were dropped, but are not required in the slightest anymore with Valve's work on proton/wine, dxvk, etc.
