Valve (Steam) begin a direct collaboration with Arch Linux

Quoting: user1
Quoting: robvvand the only issue I've had is with GPU accelerated rendering, which seems to be a bit unstable.
This is a gross understatement. In my experience, Steam is literally the only app on Linux that may cause a total desktop freeze (no matter on which DE, X.org or Wayland) after which I can do nothing but hard reboot my PC. The only workaround to it is disabling hardware acceleration in Steam.

Also, how about the fact that Steam context menu contents are 95% of the time unclickable. This is an issue since the big ui redesign update and it still hasn't been fixed after more than a year or two. You have to click sometimes dozens of times until game properties finally opens for example.

Oh, and also how Steam was already slow to launch on Linux and since the big ui update it's even slower. And many more annoyances..

I mean don't get me wrong, I have endless grattitude towards Valve for everything they've put into Linux, but you honestly have to admit that when it comes to the Steam client itself on Linux, it's a POS and the forever unfixed issues with it makes them look lazy.
this is off-topic but it sounds like either out-dated nvidia drivers or a resource limitation.

Seems Valve do intend to go back to SteamOS at some point

I could see arch being a viable option honestly. As long as they keep the systems stable and put their container runtime to use, they can provide updated graphics stacks and keep stable targets for developers.

Valve's card game Artifact is still being worked on for a big revamp
21 Mar 2020 at 2:17 pm UTC

It's really silly to me the way they monetized it. I still bought stuff but you could have avoided all the backlash by selling cosmetics like alternate art cards, sleeves, foils, etc. But these are learning moments and I hope Valve does just that.

I can't wait to play more artifact.

Easy Anti-Cheat is actually still supported for Linux, a statement from Epic Games

Quoting: liamdaweAlso, Garry said this on Reddit [External Link] today:
Ya I responded to him on that and it looks like he downvoted me. Its really sad tbh. A majority of his issues would be solved if he changed his attitude, but it doesnt seem like he's willing. Seems his development skills are lacking and his immaturity abundant.

No Man's Sky runs very nicely on Linux with Steam Play, huge online feature update and VR support coming

Quoting: PatolaNote: if Liam implemented a filtering system, I would definitely skip articles with "retro" or "pixel art"...
Haha, now that's one filter I'd use too! I'd rather 100 emulator/Proton posts than a single pixel art article :) :P To each their own...

It reminds me of a trend in auto fandom online. There's a car aftermarket trade show called SEMA and many of the vehicles displayed run towards the, ah, garish. Each year, all the major car blogs, websites, etc dutifully cover the many SEMA intros, and for a solid 4-6 days we're all inundated by photo after photo and article after article about these garish SEMA creations. It's soul killing. I'd estimate a solid 60% of car readers just check-out for that SEMA week and come back later, and there's always a big argument on site forums about whether these sites should cover SEMA at all, with passionate pro and con debaters every year...

I guess Proton is our SEMA (or maybe it's pixel art)...
Ay more car people :3

But in terms of should this be covered, I think its a waste of time to even argue about it. I think most of us are pretty opinionated and I've seen the same arguments from the same people for forever. I dont think many of us are even open for changing our minds on the matter so lets just let liam cover what he wants and if you dont like it then maybe this isnt the right news site for you.

Quoting: LinasI understand the importance of Steam Play and Proton, but is this really Linux gaming newsworthy? I personally don't think so, but I'd like to hear other options.
I think many people will be interested in playing this after the new update on Linux. So I'm inclined to believe that it is worth reporting on.

Personally I wanna pick this up but I dont think a game thats so old and has had such a poor launch is worth $30. I'd be more ok with 10-20 honestly. I know theyve put tons of work in it since but thats cause they had to to try to keep it from being a total flop. All this work since should have been in launch.

The war of the PC stores is getting ugly, as Metro Exodus becomes a timed Epic Store exclusive

My hate for Tim Sweeney is about to pass Steve Ballmer. I like to equate Sweeney to being the John McAfee of the gaming industry. I really hope Epic fails. I think we're all going to have to vote with our wallets here.

Valve's card game Artifact seems to be dying off and fairly quickly too

Man, this sucks to hear. I bought the game and have really been enjoying playing it (convoy all day). Overall I have many hours into it and have spent maybe $25 in total. I really think the community outrage was just them lashing out about not getting the game that they wanted. We've seen the same model with other games and its not really a big deal. It seems mostly that players are just sticking one to Valve for not making what they wanted (I kind of understand this but it doesnt mean Artifact isnt a good game).

Oh well.

Steam Play versus Linux Version, a little performance comparison and more thoughts

Quoting: thykrIt baffles me that non-native is much faster than native.

I really hope someday some smart software engineers will be able to explain why it is that way.
I think in simplest of terms:

DirectX translated to Vulkan is faster than native OpenGL

Quoting: GuestI guess I can understand that, but equally that very statement makes me sad. It's most certainly not right, but it is perhaps necessary to have running games via wine more accepted.
At least Valve are contributing (financially if nothing else, and financials are not to be sneezed at) back upstream.
Theres no reason to be sad about it. People are just different. Thats one of the reasons why I dont necessarily think peoples opinions (whether i agree with them or not) are wrong. Cause for everyone that has a specific opinion on something, theres probably many more that have the same opinion just like you do with wine. And although I may not agree, trying to understand their point of view will help me understand them. I think thats really important for community spaces and even commercially for understanding customers.

Do what works for you. I'll always encourage you to use proton instead since it counts for the statistics, but if youre happy with your setup then game on.
