Firefox will get AI controls to turn it all off

Quoting: hardpenguinHow about you disable them by default, Mozilla, and have people unleash AI at their own peril -_-

This is dumb. So dumb.
AI is selling like hotcakes, so Mozilla have decided that they need to provide these cool new trendy AI features out of the box in order to try and attract more users (who of course wouldn't know how to manually turn them on if they were turned off by default). But they do recognize that there are people like you who don't like anything AI, so contrary to everyone else in the competition they're actually giving you a switch that you can use to completely disable everything.

And yet you still complain, and instead want Mozilla to shoot themselves in the foot by disabling all their cool new trendy features and thus lose potential new users who will instead run even faster off to Chrome, which will mean even less revenue for Mozilla in the long term and will force them to sell out even more of their core values in order to attract funding and stay in the green, all for the sake of your personal crusade.

This is dumb. So dumb.

Quoting: grigiI would love to turn off "AI" features by default and then only turn the ones I need on manually. Instead it's either "all OFF", or "ON by default".
It's not like that though. It's either "all OFF", or "ON by default", or "some OFF and some ON, pick and choose exactly what you want to use". As far as I can tell by the pictures, you'll be able to do exactly what you want to do.

Quoting: syylk...Until you are the one shopping for a pair of DIMMs.
That's a side-effect of out-of-control capitalism though, not of AI itself. Yesterday it was bitcoin mining and GPUs, today it's "AI" and RAM, tomorrow it will be something else. It's an unfortunate that we live in a society of gullible fools, but what can you do.

Nexus Mods is under new ownership

once I even lost all my data when the Aegis 2FA app on iOS wanted to push people towards subscription right after buying it and bungling the code. In my mind I blame the original authors as much, though, because there's no way they didn't know who they're selling it to.
Uh, what? Aegis is still very much open source and free, nobody's sold it to anybody.

Steam Beta finally enables Proton on Linux fully, making Linux gaming simpler

@Nocifer, there's no change to how that's handled. It's the same as before, with it only affecting titles that have not gone through deck/steamos verification. Because naturally Valve want to keep that unless you manually force it individually.
Ugh. Then they should at least change the label to read accordingly. To me, and I'd be willing to bet to many other people as well, "Default compatibility tool" means what I choose here will be used by default for Steam Play in general, unless I change it manually in some specific game. Implicitly having a game switch to some other version without telling me defeats the purpose of a default. As it is now, however annoying the feature, at least the label makes sense.

The absolutely best part about this is that the dropdown menu where you select the Proton version currently only applies to those "other titles", so even if you want to use e.g. GE-Proton by default for everything, officially supported Steam Play titles will still run with their specific, predesignated Proton version (Proton 9.0-4, Proton 8.0-5, Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix, etc) and so for them you have to go and bypass the Proton version manually in their settings.

The way I read the screenshot from the Beta client is that hopefully, and at long last, it will be possible to select a default Proton version and have it applied to EVERY game you install from then on. Hooray for that.

The question is, does it properly understand the concept of Wine like e.g. Heroic does? Can we use it as a native Linux app to handle Windows games in multiple Wine prefixes? Like it or not, that's the status quo for gaming on Linux nowadays. I have no use for it if it must be run inside each separate Wine prefix as a Windows app.

That said, I'm looking forward to this one more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkICrJEVTjI [External Link]
Wow, now there's a game that got me unexpectedly excited. I had heard nothing about it until I read your post and watched that video. All I can hope for is that they give us a great story to go along with the great graphics and atmosphere, and since it's made by Witcher 3's director it means it's quite possible that it will deliver on that front as well (and also means that some of CDPR's major talent has split off to other pastures, which I also wasn't aware off).

As for OP, it seems a good solid game with Crysis as well as Cyberpunk vibes, and it's also something to very much look forward to. All in all, 2025 promises to be a very good year.

The new trailer for sandbox strategy game Antimatter shows off the epic scale

So basically it's Distant Worlds meets Shadow Empire meets Civilization meets... whatever the f else, combined in a single game.

Yeah, I'm sold.

The only two asterisks will be 1) the AI quality (there's no point in having all that stuff at your disposal if it feels like playing by yourself) and 2) the diplomatic depth (for the same reason). As much as I love geeking over spaceship designs and colony statistics, I've had quite enough of deep, convoluted, but ultimately boring space simulators.

EDIT: Whatever happened to the user avatars?!?

Steam games will now need to fully disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages

Quoting: scaineWe Linux users have it lucky in that regard. We might still install the "rootkit/spyware" element in some cases, but because it's tied to Proton emulating (shut up pedants!) the Windows environment, when we stop the game, we also stop all the anti-cheat crap. In our cases, it only gets to run when the game is running.
And also, when we're fully done with the game, all we need to do is delete the prefix and any remnant traces of the anti-cheat crap will get thrown to the bin along with everything else. We really do have it better than Windows peeps in that regard :)

Nexus Mods new cross-platform app adds support for Heroic Games Launcher and Baldur's Gate 3

Quoting: SilverNO3Very excited by this. One friend could be held to Windows explicitly because of mod support.

Last time I tried to mod Baldur's Gate 3, the instructions made my head spin and I got stuck. If I recall correctly, I got Lethal Company mods working and Minecraft via PrismLauncher was a 50/50.
Maybe you tried to add the mods manually, in the days before BG3 Mod Manager became a thing? Because that would be confusing and tiresome for sure, but otherwise, to mod BG3 you just download the mod, unzip it into the Mods folder, run BG3MM, enable the mod, update the mod list, and then play your newly modded game.

But yeah, in general modding is one of the few remaining sore points with Linux gaming, because downloading, updating and generally handling more than a few mods at once is much more difficult than on Windows. Nexus Mods will mostly make that a thing of the past, so I'm also super excited about it.
