Maybe everyone shouldn't just assume they don't care or think the platform is crap. Maybe you should look at it from a business perspective. GOG has been short staffed for a long time. Just look at the current openings they have https://www.gog.com/work [External Link].

Try working at a software dev shop when you're short staffed. Things have to be put on the back burner for sanity sake. Everyone is already doing extra work to just try and stay afloat.

But again this community goes straight to assuming the worst and trying to paint anyone who doesn't give more than they have as anti-Linux.

I once made a comment on this site about a game that had a kickstarter going and was using this engine. They said they were going to have Linux support. I stated I didn't want to support anything that used the C4 engine. I received a lot of flak for that comment. People attacked me saying I was crushing their dream. Now those same people need to look back and figure out if that game is still going to have Linux support or not.

I bought a license for this engine a few years ago. I thought it was great. But Eric is a very difficult person to work with if you don't share his views 100% of the time. Their community can be just as toxic as others.

From what I remember his build scripts were setup in a very complicated manner. I spent a long time trying to understand where everything is and how to build it all so I could use it properly. To me it looked like Linux was an after thought. He hacked his VisualStudio builds to work as best as he could on Linux.

Eric is a very stubborn and arrogant person from what I remember. It doesn't surprise me that a few issues with Linux and he goes on a rant saying it's crap. Also his idea about SteamOS is horrible. SteamOS is debian based, same as Ubuntu. If he thinks it's a completely different OS he is in for a surprise. You can install Steam on any distro. There is no way he can keep his engine from being used on Linux in general if he plans to support SteamOS. He could add a complicated license into the engine that states that any game supporting Linux can only be sold through Steam, but then who really wants to deal with that kind of mess when trying to make money on a game.

Either way we look at this, the comments toward him won't mean anything. He will ignore it and continue to believe he knows everything. At this point in time his engine isn't going to get very far. Look at the big players that adjusted their licensing fees. There is no reason to use the C4 engine when better options are out there.

Do We Want Ubisoft To Support Linux?

They can do what they want I just refuse to give them money. Last time I bought one of their games their servers went down for a week and I never got to play it. They can't manage crap and I'm not willing to risk my money on something that may or may not work.

I consider Steam DRM in the fact that you don't truly own your games. As we've seen in the past, Valve can and will ban someone from their service. That means all the games you've purchased go up in smoke. I can deal with Steam because it's unobtrusive and good DRM should be.

Before I went to Linux I bought all my games from GOG before I would go to Steam. Only time I went to Steam was to when something was on sale for 90%, even then I would still pick it up on GOG if I liked it and they had it. The Humble guys have a nice balance in which you can get your DRM free copy but use Steam as well.

I have a NAS setup with a backup copy of all my DRM free games. While I have no intention of pissing Valve off that doesn't mean something crazy doesn't happen and they revoke my account. We can't trust that Valve will be around forever, even if it looks like they will be.

**As noted if the game doesn't require Steam to run you can get your own backup copy but that requires the developer to program it that way. Not all Steam games are that way thus I generalize all games under the same assumptions.

Well Mack it's kind of hard to see the posts that were removed, when you know they were removed. Maybe you have some kind of special machine to see what once was but is no more.

Did I say all my posts were deleted, no, I said they started to delete my posts. Oh did I say I didn't buy the book, no I didn't. I own the damn thing. Don't go making assumptions because you did one quick little search. Every post I made about webgl was removed. Eric gets really possessive if you mention *** that isn't in his engine.

So if you weren't there reading what was happening while it happened then maybe you can stop accusing people of ***.

I also did love the engine but you know, what good are the tools if the community and developers that make don't like you? It would be like buying a car but one will repair it because you mentioned another brand.

I talked to people about it in the IRC room, this is how Eric is.

I also didn't put down the other developer, I said I couldn't support him. I didn't say "well to hell with him I hope he fails." No, I said I wasn't going to give him my money. That's no different than people who don't find the game interesting and not backing it.

I'm all for tower defense games but lately it seems the market is flooded with them. It's hard to know which ones are worth it and which ones are just shovel-ware.

After playing the game you wouldn't really know it was unfinished. I guess I haven't looked to see what else they want to add but the game is very fun. I found it worth my money and will probably play for a long time.

It's also interesting to see that they used Allegro since I haven't heard of any recent games coming out that use it.

I bought a license for the engine a few years ago and was going to use it for my development. The community is pretty up tight. I mentioned using emscripten to make a WebGL game and they got upset. They started to delete my posts on the forum. Since documentation isn't the best you need the community to help you. Since we didn't get along I couldn't proceed. So I walked away from it.

It looks pretty interesting. It's kind of hard, for me personally, to back the project. I want to support anyone offering Linux support but on the other hand I don't really want to help anyone using the C4 engine.

So is this really just like "official support" or something?
I talked with the devs when they released it for Linux. They did the same thing a lot of people did and had help and contracted someone to port it to Linux. So I don't think Linux was native at the time and required additional work to get working. They also said they pushed the engine as far as they could with SPAZ and had to get in and change code in the engine. They way they explained it is it worked and if you're willing to play with the engine code it's fine, but for SPAZ 2 they went 3D and that is why they chose Unity.
