The PS3 uses PSGL (which is a mix of OpenGL ES and NVIDIA's CG).

Quoting: Segata SanshiroI always thought they used a slightly modified version of OpenGL and a slightly modified BSD as the OS... Maybe I'm thinking of the PS3 or maybe I just made that up completely. Whoops! You're just about right. Both the PS3 and PS4 are based of modified versions of FreeBSD. The PS4 features two graphics APIs; a low-level API called GNM and a high level API called GNMX. (Sony also uses their own PlayStation Shader Language (PSSL), specifically introduced with the PS4).

I'm curious....how many of you guys are actually gonna get a Steam Machine from one of these vendors? If so, why?
The experience/benefits are that of a console in your living room etc... but if you can purchase a Steam Link, why get a Steam Machine?
No bashing intended or expected....just interested. :)

My plums are tingling. :) Guys, we're just gonna keep getting more and more epic news as the year rolls by.
Quoting: Segata SanshiroBtw, does anyone know if this will work on PS4 instead of OpenGL or not? That's going to be a pretty big factor in its adoption.AFAIK, Sony's API implementation is low-level as well....so i'm unsure if Vulkan will help them very much.

Quoting: abelthorneWell, the main problem IMO is that I'm pretty sure they think their current driver is good... It's been one year and a half since Valve announced the Steam Machines and said that they were working with nVidia & AMD on the drivers and though Catalyst has progressed since that time, it's still a piece of crap. On Windows too. ATI/AMD have never been able to provide correct drivers for their cards, I don't expect it to change anytime soon. :(AMD's driver on Windows isn't so horrible. Granted, I don't own an AMD card at the moment but alot of my friends do; and the last time I did (a few years back), my experience in Windows was fine...it was Linux that was the issue (thus moving to NV and sticking with them since). So i've not encountered alot of reports from them of consistent issues. IIRC, AMD are working with the team of the open-source driver to create/unify a set of drivers...AMD provide supervision and some proprietary blobs. Thus there's a likely chance that, when it's done, they'll be solid drivers for AMD users on Linux.
Quoting: abelthorneIt's not that they don't have interest in Linux, more that they don't really know it exists. Japanese companies know about consoles. Even Windows is pretty much inexistent in Japan. They have started to open up to it, with mixed results, and it would be very surprising if they decided to develop on an OS that is 20-50 times smaller than Windows. If Valve manages to sell tons of Steam Machines, maybe they'll start looking into this new american console but it will probably take years. Besides, Capcom has huge financial issues and I don't think the benefits of having games on Linux would cover the costs of porting them.I think most of the "big" Japanese companies that are around (Namco Bandai, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix etc) are aware of PC gamers. On top of that, i'm also confident they're aware of Valve's initiative with SteamOS/Steam Machines. The only issues are the costs/talent pool to port their library (or at least their hot sellers). If not done in-house, there's always Aspy/Feral to contact. :) If, already, there are big companies making the effort to bring their games to Linux/SteamOS, this will definitely catch their attention.
Square Enix is a bit more of a possibility as they own companies such as Eidos and are more aware of the European & US markets.

Valve has it's influence and pull; clearly, the other parties understand the potential in this platform and so will release games in order TO increase the market.....nurturing it while it's young. :)
As for EA/Ubi....i'm prediciting they'll be last in this game. They're basically gonna wait for everyone else to establish the platform/market and THEN jump in. If not of this former reason, it'll at least be due to them taking their sweet time porting their respective distribution platforms to Linux. :D

Quoting: mrdeathjrExactly if buying userbase* dont grow more is very difficult see more AAA titlesI think the logic is going to be a little different in this case. Game development and adoption on Linux is an example of the famous conundrum; the "chicken or the egg" scenario. Assuming games would only be released if there is a big enough user-base, we would not have gotten the games we have so far...especially the upcoming ones.
*for see this linux must be more simple to final user than now
However in middle of this see AAA titles like as shadow of mordor, batman, grid autosports and others is very impressive
EA and Ubisoft is very difficult however origin must be work on linux more easily (QT) on game side difficult
On EA side (if them want) maybe see first titanfall because this game use source engine (modified)
^_^

OpenGL will still exist (donno if it'll be called OpenGL 5 etc) but will be more general purpose. That's my understanding from what i've read so far.
I also concur that AMD will HAVE to sort their drivers out. AMD will be fine with Vulkan....OpenGL 1-4 and beyond...I don't know....I hope so. :)
The time i'll shit a brick is when EA/Ubisoft release games on SteamOS. :)

Quoting: subVulkan is OpenGL, for all intent and purpose...or rather, an off-shoot that is low-level and tweaked specifically for games and other applications that require low-level access/performance.Quoting: r2rXCorrect me if I'm wrong but with VULKAN it is the first time AMD can get rid of the old cruft and start from scratch without NVidia being ahead. If they fuck up again, THAT would be disappointing. But I'm positive. There is a realtistic chance this will end in a solid driver by AMD.Quoting: abelthorneThe skepticism is justified and understandable....however, AMD cannot afford to fuck around anymore. :) They'll have to get their act together. I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they'll sort their drivers out....at the very least, proper Vulkan support. :pQuoting: r2rXDrivers will also, most likely, be sorted out by November (if not before)....well, at least AMD and NVIDIA's proprietary drivers.Honestly (and sadly), I wouldn't expect real drivers from AMD by november. Or ever, in fact.

Quoting: mrdeathjrYou'll be very suprised how quickly this attitude will change. If they have a solid platform to work with; enamored with a growing user base and developer support...it'll happen...no doubt.Quoting: r2rXIIRC, both Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 are based of Unreal Engine 4....so it's not such a stretch of the imagination to see them on Linux.....same for Mortal Kombat X (Unreal Engine 3). The respective companies may not have an interest in Linux per se.....but they'll be very interested in SteamOS as a brand/platform. :DCapcom, Namco and Konami dont interest in linux (with or without steamos) because dont represent strong market around 1% (many users*) compared with steam on windows
Sega is the interesting company....they're branching away from console development and focusing on PC and Mobile.....hmm.
*More users buy titles: More Money for companies

However could be possible see other titles from other publisher like as sega, alien isolation stay very good and other titles of them like as sonic all stars racing transformed and many others

This is epic news. Everyone...this is just the beginning. We have till the end of the year for a plethora of other titles to be released for Linux (from Aspyr, Feral or other "in-house" studios) of titles that have not yet been announced.
Valve....smart, smart people. I'm so excited because I am counting the days till I can finally migrate to Linux 100%. Despite the benefit of Valve/SteamOS helping more people adopt Linux, i've always believed that Linux should be the one-stop OS for all. Open-source, customizable and an outlet for creative freedom for anyone around the world.
As for the Tux to SteamOS logo replacement...it doesn't matter. :) Let Valve promote the platform and, subsequently, help every other Linux platform. Concerning compatibility across multiple distros, this will ensure that there is one distro that helps set some solid standards (which is something Linux really needs to fully succeed....not just for games but other general/specific software).
Drivers will also, most likely, be sorted out by November (if not before)....well, at least AMD and NVIDIA's proprietary drivers. That's just how it is. :) But at least all sides will have full compatibility and with future titles being created with Vulkan, AMD and NVIDIA users will all be happy.
All-in-all, exciting times for Linux gamers. :)
NB: I won't be suprised if get Tekken 7, Street Fighter 5, Mortal Kombat X and Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain on Linux by November. :p

Love is an interesting word. Despite the context in which you can describe or relate to it, it's ultimately referring to a connection of importance.
So with GOL, the reason why I enjoy/appreciate visiting here (multiple times a day, as StianTheDark has aptly expressed) is because of the things I love. I love games, I love the existence of Linux; it's philosophy and the global effort put in to develop it as it is now (and the fact that I believe Linux is best O/S for the future), the openness of the community and...it's silly to say but Linux is the underdog to some extent.
Despite the multitude of reasons, I appreciate GOL for being part of that. :)
I know this is not the most fun/playful way to answer the question but it's the truth that I feel...and this is the basis of answering this question any/every time it comes up.
Honestly, the key is not important....I just thought to express this to everyone here at least once. :p
