Halo: The Master Chief Collection multiplayer fixed for Steam Deck / Linux

Yup, I played co-op yesterday with my Windows buddy (still need the ucrtbase "fix" to prevent desynchronization, maybe I'll look into fixing that one day). I'm glad they fixed it.

EA expanding EA Anti-Cheat - bad news for Steam Deck / Linux
30 Sep 2023 at 5:53 pm UTC

Quoting: 1xokThe kernel based AC will or have already lead to external image recognition. Extract video signal, process it and feed the result back via Bluetooth/USB. For example mouse corrections.

Chess services, where cheating is obviously done on external systems, rely 100% on AI for recognition.

In the future, in EA games, you may not even notice that you are playing against cheaters. Maybe that is already the case. Without an objective evaluation system, it's hard to say. Thus, EA and co. must also rely on AI and statistical methods here. The question is whether kernel-based systems are still useful at all. They have side effects. I would not install something like that on a Windows system. I'd rather read a book instead.
Heh, I don't really want to go into the details again about how to do it, but in addition to server side anti cheat, I'd say it's OK to let players get a little help, like if games included aim assist.
It just means better players in the lobby as long as it isn't game-breaking, and can be useful for matchmaking (for instance you are matched against someone stronger, but get a health and aim assist boost or something, and they get bragging rights/more XP/etc). So many non-invasive ways to address the problem, but as @kaktuspalme said, the crux may be that it's relatively easy to create an "anti cheat" system like this that works across many different games, while other approaches require specific consideration. And secondly, multiplayer games taking this issue seriously probably implement some kind of "defense in depth" strategy, using every tool at their disposal.

Quoting: PirolisiLol, when there is a discussion about anti cheats there are always the usual dudes talking about server sided anti cheats.... You simply don't know what you are talking about
There's more to what I suggest than server side AC. While I am certainly not an expert at multiplayer game development, are you? Would you mind pointing out the thing that I may have missed?
Of course, it is hard to prevent every kind of cheat (wallhack, auto aim, etc) short of server-side rendering, a lot can be done, and it's almost trivial to check for cheats that would alter game mechanics. While, of course, all of that make the server side more complex to develop.

Woo, they fixed it: https://nitter.net/HaloSupport/status/1707796023194874102 [External Link]

I confirm this is working, at least for the exchange, I haven't tried online yet, but there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

So if they got Respawn to switch over to it, this would kill Apex Legends on Linux / Steam Deck too.
I am relieved that Jedi Survivor isnt multiplayer, I really dig the first iteration. Definitely will play the 2nd sometime.
Requiring anti cheat for single player games isn't above them, the Master Chief collection requires it for achievements, for instance (and it's currently broken).

Well, I guess Wine will start emulating kernel APIs sooner or later, which may also help cheaters 🤷

I still think client side anti cheat is not the way to go about these problems.

Mesa getting Vulkan performance upgrades for submission merging

Quoting: redneckdrowTurnip?! I just got used to potato meaning under-powered; now they have to throw brands named for other roots and tubers in the mix? I really hate modern internet slang!
This is no slang, Turnip is just the name of a Vulkan Driver inside mesa. Just search the web for "mesa Turnip". Same as RADV (AMD), ANV (Intel), Dozen (DX12), etc. Here it's used for Qualcom Adreno GPUs (mobile devices mostly). Look for the "tu" column on https://mesamatrix.net/ [External Link]

I'm not sure where the name comes from, but at least it's simple to remember and quite searchable.

A few more search hits for it:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tested-freedreno-turnip-mesa-vulkan-drivers-in-emulation-on-poco-f3.4401031/ [External Link]

I doubt you'd find some info regarding this on Urban Dictionary.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualI've never managed to get multiplayer to work on the desktop, despite many attempts.
I had to completely uninstall it last week to finally make it work. Also, I think I had an old Proton version selected, prior to that.
I installed it from scratch, tried various Proton versions including GE, but EAC just doesn't work for me, I guess. I have similar issues with other EAC games like Back 4 Blood. The last time I tried was right after GOL announced MCC's EAC was finally working on GNU/Linux, but...
A short in the dark but, do you by any chance played Star Citizen at some point ? To make it work you have to add a line to your /etc/hosts to block an EAC server, doing so break any other games using EAC as it can't update, you might want to check that.
I don't own Star Citizen. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Oh, and I forgot to mention I also tried the Steam Flatpak, which didn't work either.

I started thinking it was an issue with Arch Linux shipping the glibc update, but everything I've read tells me they've patched it manually over half a year ago, so that shouldn't be an issue. I don't know if the Steam Flatpak bundles glibc.
That shouldn't be related, I've played with the flatpak version on Arch. The only thing I see missing from the troubleshooting steps you listed is that you may need to manually install "Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime" from Steam (should be listed next to Proton in the tools section). There was an article on GOL regarding that a while back IIRC. steam install link [External Link], steam DB [External Link]

I believe I have fixed it, what an absolutely ridiculous URL that is wow. In future, PLEAAAASE don't put bug reports in random article comments - it's lucky I even saw it. Bug reports to the Forum or GitLab [External Link] please in future.
I know, right? My bad for the bug report here, I'll try to report on GitLab in the future. It's just that this was a minor inconvenience. Thank you for fixing it, parenthesis are a common occurence on wikipedia links [External Link].

Someone suggested [External Link] sending a flag report [External Link] to 343 as indicated in their steam deck support article [External Link].

I submitted a report (see my post in the steam forums for details), unsure if additional reports would be considered helpful or spammy.

Edit: I guess it helps, this is what I've received in the automated answer:
Halo Support Agents will review your submitted media and, if it shows an in-game bug, link your Flag Report to the bug in our internal bug database. Reporting issues to Halo Support helps the development team understand how often an issue occurs, the issue's impact on players, and how they should prioritize addressing the issue.
Liam, the URL contained parenthesis that I had to manually transform to %{28,29}, I think the parser could be improved :)

Quite a few comments on the update and the steam forum, too, including mine [External Link]. I actually noticed less than 20 minutes after this update, as that's when I tried to check if I had some weekly challenges left.

I've finally started a co-op play through with a friend 1.5 weeks ago, it was an awesome nostalgia trip until now. I guess it's on hold for the moment...
