XCOM: Enemy Unknown Released For Linux

Tried it quickly with an ATI RadeonHD 7770 and the free driver (Ubuntu 14.04). Works fine but perfs are pretty sluggish. It's not a huge deal as it's a turned-base strategy game but that's odd that the perfs are worse in the main interface (in your base) and in the cutscenes than in the actual missions.

Using Mesa 10.1.3, though; It might work better with 10.2 or 10.3 but I don't know how to upgrade (I tried the Oibaf PPA a few days ago but I couldn't start OpenGL games anymore, as if direct rendering was disabled).
It might work far better with the latest Catalyst beta but I'd rather stick with the free driver unless I really need to go back to that pile of crap that is Catalyst.

Alienware Say Steam Machines Will Open The Flood Gates On New Linux Gamers
17 June 2014 at 9:12 am UTC

Quoting: Alex GovenI thought I heard the Steam controller will use non-standard wireless. I don't know if that's correct, but if it is, Windows based Steam consoles pre-controller might miss out on integration with the tranceiver.
IIRC correctly, the Alienware Alpha is Steam Controller-ready and includes the compatible wireless hardware. It was also the case on another Steam Machine (don't remember the manufacturer, it was the "white one with a glowing part") that was presented in details a few monthes ago. So I guess that Valve at least gave the specs for the controller compatibility and all official Steam Machines will have it.

Is it a real article or is PCGamesN an Onion-like website for video games?

Civilization V Strategy Game Launches Natively On SteamOS Linux

It seems that to get the DLC working, you have to verify the files of the game (through Properties). Maybe you should update the article about this.

Games On AMD FOSS Drivers 2
10 June 2014 at 8:52 pm UTC

I find the results a bit strange. I use Ubuntu 14.04 with an AMD RadeonHD 7700 and the free driver (RadeonSI). I'm not sure of the version of Mesa I have (10.0.x, I think) but I'm pretty sure I have more than 25 fps in Team Fortress 2 (the game is completely playable). My GPU isn't the same model as in the chart but it's the same generation, I guess the results should be about the same.

That's great if performances are boosted, I'm not complaining; it's just that the blue columns in the chart seem a bit low to me.

Alienware's Steam Machine Fully Announced, They Aren't Using SteamOS
10 June 2014 at 8:34 am UTC

Yeah, I guess that they wouldn't report them to 2015 because of the delay for the OS & controller. And it's probable that other manufacturers will do the same. It's not a big surprise, they have to sell their hardware.

But there's a question nagging me: wasn't the point of the Valve partnership to have machines sold with SteamOS and the Steam pad? What about this "official Valve seal" if they change the specs? Is there a list of Steam Machines partners somewhere on Valve's website and is Alienware still listed there if so?

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Confirmed For Linux & SteamOS
8 June 2014 at 8:24 am UTC

Quoting: GNUzelI need to play the Witcher 2 before I can buy this one but I am kind of excited to see it. I am considering the collector's edition but I am not sure how that'll fit in with buying it for Linux. Would I be able to use the game assets from the DVD with a Linux binary or something? ... Hmm.
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to register the game in your GOG library and download the digital version (Windows + Mac + Linux) from there when it's available. You won't get a Steam key, though.

What makes you think it's a native client? the "launch/2/executable" line? Can't it be the Wine wrapper?

AMD's OpenGL Performance Is Nothing Close To Nvidia On This Benchmark
30 May 2014 at 10:09 pm UTC

Yeah, AMD perfs suck. But that's not the worst part: the most serious issue IMO is that the Catalyst driver on Linux has a lot of bugs that make some games crash or even unable to start!

I'd be curious to see the same detailed stats on a Windows machine with DirectX. I'm not sure they would be that different from the perfs on Linux...

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition Released For SteamOS Linux
22 May 2014 at 8:32 pm UTC

Quoting: dudeThank you! I always needed this command for unity-engine based games like Kerbal. But as far as I know, Witcher 2 has it's own engine. Maybe an OpenGL bug? Some deeper insight would be nice if anybody knows.
Might be related to the digits separators differences between countries. I.e. US/UK use the dot as a separator where other countries like France use the comma (which US/UK use as a list separator). It messes scripts and settings files.

This should be reported to the developers.
