The Cheapskate's Corner 10 (Jul 18th-24th) (UPDATED)

«All Quiet on the WeSteam Front». This is how we were about to entitle this week's column before we knew about a couple of novelties to spice up this weekly report. Before knowing what they are, let's make a brief recap of all the finished deals:

image

· The Humble Weekly Sale featuring Spiderweb Software games ended just minutes ago. This particular sale broke the 4-week streak of weekly sales with fully cross-platform and DRM-free games in them, as only one of the 15 titles included was available for Linux: Avadon: The Black Fortress.

· Groupees' Build a Greenlight Bundle also ended today, with more than 5,000 bundles sold. The final Linux content of this bundle didn't change since our mention from last week: OverLight, Rawbots and DeCalc. Plus, it included three other games with varied chances of coming to Linux someday: Drip Drip (its creators might consider updating the engine themselves to release a Linux version), BrokenEarth (a future Linux version was confirmed by its developers) and Dwarf Quest (it could eventually be coming to Linux).

· The Perilous Puzzle Bundle ended last weekend and, with it, also ended your chances to get Hairy Tales, Great Permutator (finally available for Linux, as we announced before) and Wyv and Keep at a special price.

· The Chipmunk2D for Unity Kickstarter campaign also finished during the weekend, in a rather successful manner. It offered two games made with this physics engine as a pledge reward: Waking Mars and NightSky. The Kickstarter is over, but you can still buy either of these games at a good price on Steam, during the summer sale.

· Indie Royale returned to The Funding Crowd with The Debut 3 Bundle although unfortunately only one in five games was compatible with Linux: Tales of Maj'Eyal, which came with all the extra features normal donators get. If you're interested in it you can find the free regular version on the game's website.

· And finally, IndieGameStand continues in Linux-friendly mode as it offered The Cat Lady, a game that can be natively played on Linux using the AGS Linux port. The current, soon-to-expire, deal is yet another Linux game. We'll talk about it in the next section, so please keep reading.

IndieGameStand's current deal is a game already available DRM-free for Linux, Private Infiltrator:

image

Just like all deals from this provider, pay a minimum of $0.25 to get it or more than $1 for a Desura key. The beat-the-average bonus is the game's OST. Hurry up if you're interested, as the deal ends in just a few hours at midnight EDT.

UPDATE: This deal is no longer available, as we warned you. But the new IndieGameStand deal is even better than the previous one. Scroll down to the bottom of the article to find out what's itabout.

Last call for The Pixeljam Octology bundle, as it will last for less than another week. Pay what you want ($1 min) to get Potatoman Seeks the Troof, Dino Run SE, Dino Run: Marathon of Doom, Planeteri, Bitku Beta and Snowball!, as well as the Potatoman OST and Pixeljam's Volume 1 music album:

image image image image
image image image image

If you pay $10 or more you'll get access to Pixeljam's Treat List, a special website with free Pixeljam-related bonuses for downloading.

image

Charlie's Games Mega Bundle Pack is still going on with no signs of ever finishing. We're sure that by now you already know it by heart, but here we go again: $1 or more to get Irukandji, Bullet Candy (2013 update) and Bullet Candy Perfect. Paying more than $9.99 will also get you a DRM-free copy and a Steam key for Scoregasm. For any additional Steam or Desura key, just drop an email to Charlie himself and he'll gladly provide them to you.

One down, two still remain. These are Indiebundle.org's bundles with Linux content -or potential Linux content- in them:

· The Deadly Dungeons Bundle includes Dungeon Fray (already available for Linux), Knytt Underground (its Linux version currently in beta state) and Dwarf Quest (could be coming to Linux someday), for $5. The usual disclaimer applies: buy it at your own risk since right now it only contains one Linux game which can be bought separately for less than the bundle price.

· The Kids & Charity Bundle doesn't include anything playable on Linux right now, but many of its games could be ported someday. In the $1-$4 level you can find 3 Teddy Floppy Ear games made with Unity: The Race, Mountain Adventure and Kayaking. The $5-$7 level offers Wimp: Who Stole My Pants? (allegedly being ported to Linux) and Woodle Tree (Linux version coming in a future release). Bold type with capital letters disclaimer: get this bundle only if you like to gamble, as you can end up empty-handed.

Steam's Summer Getaway Sale is nearing the end, but there's still 4 days to browse and pick among its vast selection of sales. Just like last week we'll not be listing every single discounted game, as you can check our sales page for that. Instead, we'll tell you about which games you can find cheaper or including more added value (e.g. DRM-free version, Desura key) elsewhere.

image image

Indie Gala is holding a parallel summer sale with cheaper Steam keys for two Linux games: Hacker Evolution: Duality, Hacker Evolution: Untold. If you prefer them DRM-free and/or on Desura, you can get them both there for the same price.

image image

Apart from those Steam games, on Indie Gala you can also find a pair of discounted Desura titles: Cardinal Quest and Deadly 30.

image image image image
image image image image

FTL: Faster Than Light, Receiver, Lugaru HD, Proteus, Kentucky Route Zero, Legend of Grimrock, Unity of Command and Unity of Command: Red Turn, all of them can be purchased directly from their developers and get a DRM-free version as well as a Steam key.

image image image image image

Finally, Gateways, Anodyne, Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten, Organ Trail: Director's Cut and McPixel can also be bought directly from their developers and get both a DRM-free download and a Desura key, besides the Steam key.

Now let's talk about the new deals. As we said before we were afraid there would be nothing new to talk about this week, but luckily a couple of things came up today and this section won't be devoid of content.

image

The new Humble Weekly Sale is different from all the previous ones. It doesn't primarily feature games, but music. Pay what you want to get no less than 11 music albums by legendary Jim Guthrie and his friends. Beat the current $3.50 average and you'll also obtain a digital copy of Indie Game: The Movie and the game Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP:

image

Every purchase also includes a 50% off coupon for a double LP vinyl of Indie Game: The Movie (Soundtrack), only valid while supplies last. So if you're interested in the works of Jim Guthrie and are hipster enough to own a vinyl record player :P don't hesitate and get this sale ASAP!

image

The second new deal of the week is ShinyLoot's Summer Platformer Sale. From today and since 28 July, 18 indie platformers are offered 50% off and DRM-free. Out of the 18 selected games, the ones available for Linux are Bridge Crosser, Grimind On The Shoulders Of Ancestors (includes a Desura key) and Ostrich Island (with a Desura key coming soon):

image image image image

Additionally everyday at midnight CST a new daily deal will go live with discounts going up to 80% off, so stay tuned for more cheap Linux platformers.

UPDATE: Ostrich Island is no longer available at 75% off and it's gone back to the default 50% off discount.

image

With the next Groupees' bundles being music-only and the next Indie Royale having no definite date yet, our only hopes for new Linux games deals are pinned on IndieGameStand as usual. Having removed the already featured games from the list, the remaining ones are: Scoregasm, DROD RPG: Tendry's Tale, Pandora: Purge of Pride and SickBrick as games already available on Linux. Alternatively it could also be Party of Sin, a game allegedly coming to Linux. In just a few hours we'll find out which one -if any- of these games is the new featured PWYW deal.

And that's all for today. Don't forget to check our bloated sales page and don't hesitate to contribute to it if you spot any error or know about a new deal. See you next week, my cheap friends! ;)

As we said before, there's a new IndieGameStand deal, and a very exciting one indeed. Pay a minimum of $0.25 (or $1 min for a Desura key) and get Pitman:

image

The beat-the-average bonus are arguably even better than the main feature. Beat the current $1.75 average and get wallpapers, a strategy guide, the OST and an Android version for Pitman, and the current TRI alpha:

TRI also comes with a soundtrack. Like all IndieGameStand deals this one will be live for 4 days, until next Monday night.

Great Permutator for 64-bit Linux is available now!  This one was mentioned in past editions of "The Cheapskate's Corner" as a possible upcoming port, due to comments by the developer, and it is here now.  It's relevant for this article not only because GOL first mentioned it in earlier editions of this column, but also because it's on sale for 50% off for a bit more than one week!

For those who are curious, there is a demo version on Desura (I haven't tried it), and another community member has already added it to the sales page.

Oh, also... as of now (timestamp of this post) IndieGameStand has come through for us, yet again, bringing us Pitman and a whole slew of goodies in the beat-the-average corner, including an alpha key for the developers next game, TRI.  Alongside that, average-beaters will get a Pitman strategy guide, a copy of all of the dev's game music to date, and the APK installer of Pitman for Android.

Pretty good deal I'd say, considering that the average is around two dollars right now.
