The Cheapskate's Corner 8 (Jul 4th-10th) (UPDATED)

By - | Views: 14,466
Welcome back to another issue of The Cheapskate's Corner, your favourite information source about bundles, sales and deals involving Linux games. This week we've got plenty of stuff for you, counting both new and ongoing deals. But be quick, as some of the latter are only hours from ending!

However, let's begin by taking a relaxed look at the deals that ended during the last week:

image

· The Humble Bundle with Android 6 ended last Tuesday leaving 1 Android exclusive (Pulse) and 9 cross-platform titles behind: McPixel, Waking Mars, NightSky, Aquaria, Organ Trail: Director's Cut, Stealth Bastard Deluxe, Frozen Synapse, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut and Fractal: Make Blooms Not War, the last two games making their Linux debut. In spite of several repeating games, a great bundle indeed.

· We remind you that Amazon's Indie Games section big opening celebration ended some time ago, but there's still a game bundle with Linux content: the Indie Combat Pack, with Dungeon Hearts, Guns of Icarus Online and SpaceChem for $9.99. And until July 17 there's also the buy-any-indie-game-and-get-3-games-for-free promotion going on: among the current 3 gifts there's a Steam key for Guns of Icarus Online. But beware, as the free games change every now and then!

· And finally, this week's Humble Weekly Sale ended today so you no longer can get Shank and Shank 2 for whatever you want. But fear not, as another fully cross-platform weekly sale has occupied its place! To know what is it this time, please do read on...

image

Alright, let's begin chipping away at the current deals and we'll do it by starting with the ongoing ones:

image

The Pixeljam Octology bundle continues its 4-week long course offering almost everything Pixeljam has ever done. Pay what you want (above a dollar) and get Potatoman Seeks the Troof, Dino Run SE, Dino Run: Marathon of Doom, Planeteri, Bitku Beta and Snowball!, as well as the Potatoman OST and Pixeljam's Volume 1 music album:

image image image image
image image image image

As we said last week, if you pay $10 or more you'll get access to Pixeljam's Treat List, a special website where members can download free Pixeljam-related bonuses every now and again. The bundle will be up another three weeks so you still have time to save some change to buy it.

image

Indie Gala's The Indie Gala Summer Dream bundle is ending in less than two days, so you'd better be quick if you're interested in any of the 5 Linux games it features. Pay anything you want to get DROD: King Dugan's Dungeon and DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold:

image image

Paying a minimum of $1 you'll also get Oil Rush, along with the Tower Defense map pack and the OST on Steam:

image

And if you also beat the current average of $3 you'll also get DROD: The City Beneath and DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder on Desura:

image image

In total 5 Linux games for a minimum of $3, not a bad deal at all!

UPDATE: This bundle is now over.

image

Another week has passed and Charlie's Games Mega Bundle Pack is still live. So more chances for you to get some of his games: pay $1 or more and get Irukandji, Bullet Candy (2013 update) and Bullet Candy Perfect. Paying more than $9.99 will get you a copy and a Steam key for Scoregasm. Ask Charlie for Steam and Desura keys of any of the games in the bundle and he'll gladly provide them to you.

image

None of Indiebundle.org's bundles have ended this week, so you can get Linux games in any of the following deals:

· The Perilous Puzzle Bundle offers Hairy Tales at the $5 level and Wyv and Keep at the $7 level. Within the first level there's also Great Permutator, which is allegedly being ported to Linux.

· The Deadly Dungeons Bundle includes Dungeon Fray for $5. This game alone wouldn't justify paying the price, but the bundle also includes Knytt Underground (currently in beta state for Linux) and Dwarf Quest (the developers of which have taken notice of the interest in a Linux version), also at the $5 tier. So buy it at your own risk, as nobody knows when (if ever) any of these games will come to Linux!

· Finally, the Kids & Charity Bundle doesn't include a single Linux game as per now, but many of its games may end up coming to Linux someday. The $1-$4 level includes 3 Teddy Floppy Ear games: The Race, Mountain Adventure and Kayaking, they are all made with Unity so they could easily be ported to Linux. In the $5-$7 level we find Wimp: Who Stole My Pants? (which is supposedly being ported to Linux) and Woodle Tree (another Unity game that will apparently have a Linux version in a future release). If you should buy the previous bundle at your own risk, precautions should be doubled with this one as you won't be able to immediately play any of its games natively.

gog.com's 2013 #NoDRM Summer Sale is ending in less than 24h, so this is your last chance to get some DRM-free game assets to be played natively on Linux with the help of a convenient open source client. Please check our sales page for a full list of the games and what to use to play them on Linux.

UPDATE: This sale is now over.

image

If the previous sale is about to end, more so is Shinyloot's SGC Indie Sale 2013, with less than 10 hours to go. Hurry up and go there if you're interested in getting one of the following games at 50% off: Caster (DRM-free + Steam), Gravi (DRM-free + Desura), Rijn the Specpyre in... Manor of the Damned! (DRM-free + Desura) and SpaceChem (DRM-free + Steam):

image image image image

UPDATE: This sale is now over.

After reviewing what we all knew from past articles, let's go with this week's novelties:

image

Yay! For the fourth week in a row, the Humble Weekly Sale comes with fully cross-platform and DRM-free games. This time around they are featuring Two Tribes' titles. Pay what you want and get Toki Tori and EDGE, both available for Android too:

image image

As usual, you'll need to pay $1 or more to get Steam keys for the games. If you beat the average (currently at around $2.50) you'll also get RUSH:

image

Beating the average will also get you more than 100MB worth of bonus content in the form of concept art. All the games come with their respective soundtrack and with a 10% discount for the impending Toki Tori 2 if redeemed on Steam.

image

The new IndieGameStand deal is a really interesting one. Pay what you want to get The Real Texas DRM-free + a Desura key:

image

Beat the current $1.80 average and get The Real Texas OST, papercraft models of The Real Texas characters and the soon-to-come-to-Linux Paradise Perfect Boat Rescue:

image

This deal has been going on for two days already, so you only have two more days to get it before it ends!

UPDATE: This sale is now over, but the new one is also Linux-friendly! See below for more details.

image

What? Kickstarter? Is this The Cheapskate's Corner or The Funding Crowd? No, we haven't gone mad for good and your browser is working perfectly: turns out that there's an ongoing Kickstarter campaign that offers a pair of Linux games as rewards to pledges. That campaign is Chipmunk2D for Unity, we talked about it in our last crowdfunding column, and the minimum $15 pledge includes two cross-platform games produced with this tool, Waking Mars and NightSky:

image image

These games were part of the late Humble Bundle with Android 6 where you could get them way cheaper, but if you missed that bundle or if you want to support this Kickstarter (or both), here's a good chance to get these fantastic games at a discount. There's 9 days left, so we'll be reminding you about this deal next week.

image

Here's a bundle debuting in The Cheapskate's Corner: GamersGate's IndieFort Multiplayer Bundle. The bundle includes 3 games but unfortunately only one of them is available on Linux, Awesomenauts:

image

The bundle costs $6.99/6.99€ while Awesomenauts is listed at $9.99/9.99€, so that would suppose a 30% discount for this game alone. Plus, one of the other two games is AirBuccaneers, a title that was being ported to Linux but sadly was put on hold. But one would expect it to come to our OS sooner or later, so getting it in this bundle would act as a sort of discounted pre-order. As always, do it at your own risk and don't come complaining at us. :P

image

And finally, we couldn't end this article without mentioning the opportune sale of arguably the game of the week. Right now and until next Monday get Left 4 Dead 2 75% off on Steam:

image

If you're not sure if this game is for you or not, don't worry! Coinciding with the sale the game is free to try during the weekend, so cancel all your plans and get ready for some intense zombie-smashing! :D

image

This time we really don't have a single clue. There are a pair of incoming Groupees bundles but they are music-only, and there's also a new Humble eBook Bundle but as the name suggests there's no game in it (although we highly encourage you to get it as we all could use a good read between one game and the next). So the only prediction we'd dare to do is the next IndieGameStand deal -due next Sunday- being another Linux title. It could be Scoregasm (unlikely while Charlies' Games Sale is on, though), The Cat Lady (playable natively using the AGS Linux port) or maybe Party of Sin (there's a Linux version planned, as avarisclari reported) or Private Infiltrator (a Linux version being in the developer's plans). We'll see.

Anyway, we're pretty sure that before the weekend ends we'll already have had to update the article to report at least an unexpected new deal or bundle. If not, it'd be the first time to happen.

And that's all we had for today. Don't forget to regularly check our sales page to know the latest cheap games available, and don't hesitate to submit any new deal you spot that isn't already there. Good night cheapskates, see you next week! ;)

We knew it! It's only Saturday and we already had to update the article to include a new deal! It's the soon-to-end Indie Gala June, which has unlocked 8-Bit Commando:

image

Get it on Desura -along with a bunch of other non-Linux games- for $1 or more. As we said, this bundle is ending in roughly 24h so don't hesitate and get it if you e.g. missed the game when it was recently featured on Indie Game Stand!

UPDATE: 24h do pass quickly and so this bundle is now over.

The weekend is not over yet and another deal has landed: the new IndieGameStand deal includes 3089 as the main feature and Gentrieve 2 as the beat-the-average bonus:

image image

Pay what you want for 3089 ($1 min to get a Desura key) or beat the current $1.75 average and get Gentrieve 2 too. Deal available for the next 78h.

We were wrong once more as there weren't only two music-only Groupees bundles coming, but also a brand new Build a Greenlight Bundle too! Its Linux content is not particularly abundant but at least there are two games, the minimum you can choose to get, OverLight and Rawbots:

image image

Plus the next bonus game to be unlocked is another Linux title, DeCalc:

image

This bundle will be live for the next 9 days, so we'll be talking again about it next Thursday in our next column. There are some more bonus to uncover that could be Linux games and even some of the regular games could be coming to our OS someday; we'll analyze them all.

Article updated to include The Indie Gala June and its only Linux game.

Yeah, me too. I got it in a Green Light Bundle, I hope they'll issue Desura keys whenever they release a Linux version.

Hmm... I just realized that this past Humble Bundle With Android 6 was a 'first' in two different ways.  As we discussed before, it's Revolution Software's first actual Linux release (Broken Sword: Director's Cut), but also it was the first Humble Bundle to offer a Kickstarted game, Organ Trail.

Pretty neat, huh?
muntdefems Jul 7, 2013
What? Was Organ Trail crowdfunded? Why did nobody tell me about it? And more importantly: why didn't you add it to the wiki yourself? :P
Speedster Jul 7, 2013
Nice to see that list of released games starting to grow, isn't it?
muntdefems Jul 7, 2013
Very nice indeed. ^_^

PS: Article updated again to include the new IndieGameStanddeal.
muntdefems Jul 8, 2013
And another update to include the new Groupees Build a Greenlight Bundle 3.
