Egosoft have been detailing their porting X Rebirth to Linux with a series of forum posts. It's good to see them be open about it, and we look forward to testing it out.
The thread isn't a month old, but clearly details that the process is under-way. Interestingly, the developers seem to discuss some of the pros and cons of the various debuggers and tool-chains involved, as well. Nothing quite as exciting as the outcome of the work though.
Regardless of X-Rebirth's (apparent) rocky start, it will be fun to sink hours into, while waiting for Star Citizen and Elite:Dangerous to catch up!
It currently has "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam, so it seems there's a lot of unhappy people about the launch. The developers have put out multiple patches for fix issues, and the negative reviews are slowly turning to positive.
By the time it comes to Linux, it may actually be worth buying.

Not sure I'll have anything to do with Elite Dangerous, I still haven't forgiven Braben for Frontier First Encounters. I have the X3 games but haven't really had the time to put in any time on them.

Having spent (and spending) countless billions of hours on X2 (LGP), X3:R (LGP), X3:TC (steam under wine) and now X3:AP (native steam), I can only add a huge /+1 for Egosoft's decision.
Though I would imagine my wife will not be too happy about it... :)

Is good have more games ported for Linux but in this case I prefer wait and see if is in better state that in the original release.

Great to see article about X Rebirth here in GOL.
Most of the reviews are based on the first released version. The release was disaster without doubts but the game has evolved a lot since then. It is now on version 3.10 and greatly improved. As can be read from the reviews the reviewers has not even played game enough to build first factory - doesn't give right picture about the game at all.
X series and X Rebirth are very different compared to Elite series. X series is about trading and building empire while Elite series is more about dogfighting.
Elite: Dangerous is quite good but still very shallow. As Elite fans describes it: "a mile wide and an inch deep".
This is great time for space game fans. X Rebirth, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, etc. There is awfully lot of fight going on between fans which is extremely silly.

X2 was ported at first from LGP. Some years ago Egosoft took the whole development in-house and restarted porting the X games. It was impressive to see timon37 porting the code to Linux and giving support during the betas. Knowing he is working on it, it gives me hope (and I will be happy to spend some money). He is a nice, helpful and talented guy.

They did port it in-house when it came to steam, and i threw money at them then, and i'll be throwing money at them for X-Rebirth too!

Yea! About time!!!!.
Sunk many an hour into the LGP port. Stopped after getting a amd card as it failed to start. When egosoft redid the x3:r port started to play again via steam, as well as X3:TC/AP. X3:R is still my fav.

The game is notoriously bad. They're porting it to Linux just to squeeze a few bucks from unsuspecting players (i.e. people who do not dual boot).

If you happen to like the other X games then you might want to pass this one, it is nothing like the other in the series.
