GOL Game Jam Is Now Live, Development Can Begin!

Our first ever GOL Game Jam is now live and ready. All we need now is submissions of Linux games from our fine community members!

To refresh your memories, I decided that it would be interesting to run a game jam on GOL and after some debating and feedback I set a date and announced that it would arrive. Well, here I am and hopefully so are you!

The idea is simple: you have about a week to make a Linux game and submit it to our itch.io game jam page. After the one week submission period we have a week-long rating period during everyone (including those that didn't submit a game) gets to rate games based on their graphics, sound, gameplay and stability/performance. After the votes are in we will have found a winner. The prize is, like I previously mentioned, an interview here on GOL about both the process of making that game and other projects the winner might have. Free promotion, you see.

Note that the game jam page is unlisted and cannot be found directly on itch.io. You need to access it directly with the page link: http://itch.io/jam/gol-game-jam

The game jam page contains the rules but I will also have them here:

1. The game must run natively on Linux in some kind of executable form (no Wine or DOSBox)
2. You may team up or make a game on your own
3. Your game can use pre-made engines
4. The use of pre-made assets is allowed but restricted to assets that anyone can obtain and use, you may use your own assets that you make during the jam freely
5. You may not use a full game as a template for your game, the game should be designed by you
6. You can license your game under a license of your liking but the use of open licenses is encouraged (GPL, MIT, BSD, etc)

As for the optional theme that some people desired, that would be Unknown. You may use that as the theme of your game or ignore it entirely and come up with a game idea all by yourself. You won't gain or lose points by following the theme of this jam.

Well i started my game today, it's called Bomb Tux or Tux Bomb! a remake of Bomb Jack.

I made a video how i started, i will make another a bit later or tomorrow, i will make all videos how i develope that small game :D enjoy!

I promised myself to take this opportunity to get familiar with the Unity Editor, and I did today. I - almost - completed the 'Roll a ball' tutorial and I must say, I quite like the editor so far. Although the Linux version does have some issues (yet?). I wish I had done this/these tutorials sooner so I could use my time this week to participate. Don't really have ideas for what little I can do with it now.

Any idea anybody why I cannot login to Unity store from thhe editor? I can login at their website, I reset the password just to make sure, can still login at their website, but it doesn't let me load anything from the store... :-( I want to try out as well...

Strange - I don't need to login upon opening the store, because I've already logged in when opening the editor. Although the link provided in the webstore isn't recognised by Firefox or Chrome (they can't find the right protocol).
Am trying out their own Terrain assets package right now, it seems to work for me.

Create a URI scheme on firefox, im not sure how works with firefox / linux, but with KDE it's easy.

Bear with me if I'm stupid...

I start Unity. I get loged in automatically. Did a logout and a login again, to no avail.
The I open or start a new project. Go to assets, want to drag in something. Say a Santa hat. Need to import package.
Then a window opens asking me for my login:

It doesn't work, neither with my login name, nor with the mail address, nor if I login with firefox at the asset web page beforehand.

... I got it!
If I don't do Import Package, but Open Asset Store, it looks way better!

Thanks for bearing with me. :)

Anything you would recomment to watch or read for a starter?

Haha, I've never tried the Import button, just went straight to the Open Store button.
Can't really help you much with recommendations, as I've only done the first tutorial on their website. But I do get the feeling that one covers quite a broad set of topics, and they mention further tutorials about certain aspects in the video's (I assume, but didn't check, that there's links to them below), so you can decide which to watch.

One more thing I can say is that, before you try the Tank Tutorial, the asset package requires editor version 5.2, while the Linux version isn't there yet. May be worth checking before you do any other tutorials.
