Saints Row 2 & 3 Are Being Ported By Virtual Programming

With earlier news about another Saints Row game, a member of the community sent word that Virtual Programming have updated their website to include Saints Row 2 & 3 as in development.

We know their ports are still a bit controversial, but after how well they have done recently I think they deserve some pretty high praise. Their recent test-port of Arma 3 for example had beautiful performance, and I still hope it's promoted to a full port with VP.

If you don't remember, they don't port games "natively", but they use what people refer to as a "wrapper". The reason they still get flak as people are rather bitter from the initial port performance of The Witcher 2, but they have been getting better and better, and they are proving themselves.

They state the ports are currently in beta, and so they should be out before too long.

This doesn't really change my thoughts on it, as it's a great way to quickly boost our library, but how do you feel?

This also suggests that Saints Row IV and Saints Row: Gat out of Hell will be ported by someone else. Since neither are on VP's website.

Thanks for letting us know @k4os77. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I think this is actually good news. I'm to the point now where I would almost prefer a VP port for a game over another third party company. Obviously, I'd still like a native port if it's done in-house, but VP's performance track record is now better than both Aspyr and Feral (as much as the people on this site probably don't want to hear that). I don't care how a game gets to Linux. I just want it to be the best it can be when it gets here.

wine is a wrapper too and has good performance on a lot of games.

I think VP has a very bad reputation due to the huge problems in The Witcher 2 (I don't know if they still exist or if the game was patched successfully).

They now did proof they are capable of adapting their wrapper to several games which ran with pretty good performance. So we'll have to wait and see how the games will be.

just waiting for it!

Quoting: camocelticI'm a bit disappointed that it isn't Feral or Aspyr, but I do have to admit that they did a (mostly) good job on Bioshock Infinite. I'll give Saints Row 2 a shot since I already own it, but Saints Row 3 is, at most, a maybe right now.

I not. Its good news for me. Why? Look at new Feral games. Performance is poor even on high end PC and not compare with Windows build. Also latest Feral ports even not support AMD GPU (I know, AMD have very bad OpenGL implementation but most others game works well). So what? Look at ARMA 3 port, in many moment Linux performance is better than Windows! And all ports works on Nvidia and also on AMD GPU! I have all VP ports like The WItcher 2, Stronghold 3 Gold, Spec Ops: The Line, Bioshock: Infinite and Dirt: Showdown and all works fine on my AMD GPU. Feral ports? Look Shadow of Mordor not supported, on many new GPU unplayable, on old gpu playable but with very bad FPS. This same is with Company of Heroes 2 and look like same with Alien Isolation. So. This is good news with VP ports, because they doing a great job.

There's not anywhere near a big enough sample size to make that declaration. I've been very happy with what Aspyr and Feral have done to date. I know Shadows of Mordor lagged behind Windows in terms of performance, but I still get great framerates, and the game is rock-solid stable, so I really don't care about comparative benchmarks.

So, I need a large sample size to make my "declaration", but you only need your own opinion to make yours? LOL Nice.

You're basically saying you only care about how it makes you feel (benchmarks don't matter), and you don't care about how well it works for anyone else. [sarcasm]You're a real team player.[/sarcasm] If you're satisfied with mediocre gaming performance, have fun with that, but don't hate on other people's excitement about an upcoming game.

I like that companies use the wrapper route to bring down development costs, I think the naysayers do not understand the underlying mechanics of a wine/eos. In the short run it gives a good baseline performance for standard shaders and standardized library calls across a lot of hardware. Is that a baseline that most native linux ports claim to achieve ?

What got your panties in a bunch? Sheesh. Seriously, man, if you're going to have a temper tantrum every time one of your statements is challenged then I suggest you stay away from the internet.

You appeared to be making an objective statement of fact which is why I challenged it. I then pointed out, by way of personal anecdote, that there is a difference between benchmarks and real-world gameplay experiences. Yes, I know that Shadow of Mordor technically performs worse in Linux than in Windows, but since it still performs quite well in Linux, what does it really matter?

Now, are you ready to discuss this like an adult? Or are you going to throw another hissy fit?

Cool, thank God for this is not feral.

I am very happy that Saints Row 3 is coming to my favourite OS. It is the only SR game I played and it was only for a very short time (very few hours total, at best) and I liked it. Unfortunately it did not work in WINE so I stopped playing it.

Also, I'm happy that I will finally play a VP ported game :D I have a positive opinion about VP (especially when it comes to older games) but now I will be able to finally try it myself, as I own this game already.
I also have The Witcher 2 but it is one of their early ports... can you guys please tell me if the port was updated and if it is working fine now? I red some pretty bad reviews about it back when the port was released.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, I also have Bioshock Infinite which AFAIK is a VP port (???)... I played it for about half an hour and stopped due to the poor performance, but otherwise the game worked really well. The performance, however, is also partly my hardware's fault ... it's a 3 years laptop and even tho it was very powerful back then, but today, well, not as much... but still not garbage either, not at all.
