Civilization VI was originally announced for Linux back in May, since then we've had a lot of silence on it, until today. Aspyr Media seem to be the developer handling it, but they are still investigating if it's viable.

I know its not a detailed statement, but it is absolutely full truth. Just because we are using OGL, that does not automatically translate to a workable Linux port. There are tons of complexities there (as you all well know). We have our team head down on proving that it can be done up to our quality standards. Once we know that, we will share the news.
This is a real shame to see it change from a confirmed port, to only something that's being investigated.
I can only hope if they are unable to do it, that another developer picks it up. I would love to see Aspyr Media handle it though, as their other ports are good and I have a lot of respect for them as developers, but if they can't, then someone else needs to step up. Steam stats match Steam game sales quite nice often.
Neither one of which are very accurate. Many people playing games on Linux bought those games on Windows and they are counted as Windows sales. Also many people buy games and play them in Wine, which are also counted as Windows sales. Neither one of these in any way show up in steam numbers related to Linux. It may not be a massive difference but a small reduction in Windows usage added to a small addition in Linux isn't so small. We don't know how much of a difference it makes so you can't really make a conclusion either way.
Also I have bought games through steam, just to get the data files so that I could play the games in Linux. IE, the recently community ported Jedi games, need for speed II, Doom I II and III, all the Quake's, Morrowind and a few more I believe (a few of these were purchased outside of Steam but would have been bought through Steam if they had Linux support). All of those sales were counted as Windows sales, but they aren't actually Windows sales. The original developers/publishers should really start trying to make deals with community ports to offer the games for Linux through Steam. It requires no work and is basically just free money. They can even make them unsupported ports like Arma III is now and they don't even have to support them, but they would count as Linux sales and people could play them without manual setup in SteamOS.

Just watched a twitch event by Aspyr and somebody was asking if there are any news regarding the linux port. This is the answer he received:
AspyrMedia : Aspyr is not working on Linux currently. That doesn't mean we won't in the future.

I'm afraid that we'll have to lower our expectations. From what they write it seems like they haven't done a thing yet and even in the most positive outcome we're going to be in for a looong wait.
What I don't understand is why they first announce it and then have no plan in place... I mean games like that take forever to be produced - there should have been enough time while Firaxis is working on the main version for them to develop some idea of what they're doing or going to do... and not a "Uh... Linux, uh, we have to do some feasibility analyses first!". This sounds a lot like Brexit all over again ;)

That's not cool. I only bought C6 because I was sure it will be available for Linux. If they won't release Linux version I will not buy their games anymore.
