Introversion Software, creators of Prison Architect, Darwinia and plenty more have added experimental Linux support to Scanner Sombre [Steam, Official Site], their latest title.

Buried at the end of their VR mode beta announcement, was a note that Linux support has been added in experimental form. You need to opt-in to the beta to access it.

About the game
QuoteRegaining consciousness you smell the damp. Opening your eyes you see the stone walls of the chamber flickering by the light of the fire; you stumble to your feet and kick a helmet clattering across the floor. Slowly the ache in your head begins to subside and you notice the beginnings of a passage. After a few steps the darkness consumes you. Returning to the safely of the fire you see a LIDAR scanner on the floor - a trigger press results in a faint glow coming from inside the helmet. You put the helmet on, adjust the beam-width and proceed into the abyss….

Inspired by Gone Home and Dear Esther, Scanner Sombre is a cave exploration experience. With stunning visuals and a terrifying theme, it is the 6th major video game released by Introversion Software - creators of the million selling, BAFTA award winning Prison Architect as well as Uplink, Darwinia, DEFCON and Multiwinia.

I think it looks extremely cool, so once it's a little more supported I will likely report on it.

Wow now that's an interesting aesthetic! Not entirely sure for how many hours I'd be able to digest it, but neat nonetheless.

Sadly this game has apparently been a complete commercial failure for them with just a few thousand copies sold. I just bought it, mostly because it seems like a great game for VR but glad to see Linux support as well.

its nothing original, its just a point cloud generated by the kinect trying to detect stuff.

but use it to make an game? that is indeed original.

Lidar is the new wireframe! :P

Not that interested into that game myself, but I see the potential with VR headsets :)

Well from that perspective nothing is original, is it? It's just a hand drawn animation, or just an object built with polygons, or just a sprite or bitmap, just a raytraced lighting, just a video scan, it's just code...

I've never seen a game with this kind of artwork. Therefore it's original, regardless of method to achieve it. Don't you agree? :)

read everthing that i said, not just part of it.

yes, nothing is original, everything is a remix, i'm just pointing out this, this is not an flaw of the game, its not like if the game is less good due to not being completely original.

No, it was the first part of it I wanted to make a point out of. Of course something is original even if the method to create the expression is not. To point out that the technology in itself is not original is just meaningless.

Let's not make more out of it than that. :)
