Something for the weekend - Spec Ops: The Line is free on Humble Store

By - | Views: 13,491

Just a quick tip, Humble Store is currently giving away Spec Ops: The Line which has a Linux version. It's free to grab a permanent copy (no strings attached) for another 1 day and ~20 hours.

Spec Ops was ported to Linux by Virtual Programming back in 2015. Here's a little more about the game itself:

Spec Ops: The Line is an action-packed Third-Person Shooter that delivers heart pounding physically close combat through a squad-based play mechanic. Players lead a team of three characters, Captain Martin Walker, Lieutenant Adams and Sergeant Lugo. Each character has his own distinct personality and specialized skills, and the mature story they each play a role in explores the dark side of war in a realistic way, in which there are no good outcomes, only hard choices. As missions are completed more advanced weapons and equipment are made available. In addition, the desert environment of Dubai is brought into the game in a unique way with stunning visuals, and dynamic sandstorms that actively effect level designs, and which can be used to help and hinder progress. The vertical interiors of Dubai high rise buildings also provide tactical advantages and risks that can used be by players. Multiplayer campaigns bring new modes and unusual situations and environments to expand the single player experience.

If you see stuttering issues, you can try opening the file "steamapps/common/SpecOps_TheLine/Engine/Config/BaseEngine.ini" (or just right click in Steam -> Properties -> Local Files tab -> Browse local files) and adjust the "PoolSize" option under the "TextureStreaming" section to something like 256 which can make it quite a bit smoother.

If you grab it using our affiliate link, then we can also earn a little extra if you decide to pick up anything else within 24 hours.

Do the Steam shader pre-catching really help with the frame rate of this game?

Thanks for the heads up; I've had this game on my wish list for quite some time and now I got it for free :)

Possibly the best TPS for Linux out there.

The game is really looking great and running smooth. It's not like the old spec ops, as it's primary action based but the realisation is nice and environment are splendid imo. I think it's more than worthy to get it as we can also play it on multiplayer in coop and with windows gamers.
Thanks Liam for the complementary informations!

TBH, I really get more and more disappointed by Humble :((
I received their email with 'FREE GAME' in the subject. Nothing in the mail said more about what game it would be or where to look for it.
I glanced over their entry page, but unless you stay and watch there LOOONG you're likely to miss the advert. I actually 'found' it by this article here. (OK, I went to the wrong entry page, namely the store page. Should have gone to top level. My bad...)
Not that I expected too much - all free games from Humble (that I remember) are steam-only anyhow.

Next was that earn-points promotion to get reduced/free games. All windows-only.....

What did they write in the email? "We miss you". Hell, I miss the Humble that had been the company getting the Linux/DRM-free wagon rolling many years ago. Where is it?

(Yes, I know there's finally a new HIB out. Undecided yet, some I already own, others are not my style. It would be the first one that I do not buy.....)

Definitely a nice game.
In case someone is having problems with stuttering starting on the menu screen: for some reason loading into a game closing it completely and then and starting it a second time always fixed it for me.

Certainly an interesting game. Didn't even know about it before.

Thank you very much Liam, I have been missing playing a good shooter for a long time.
