Techland haven't decided if Dying Light 2 will be on Linux

By - | Views: 41,171

With the announcement and trailer of Dying Light 2 [Official Site] shown off during E3, we reached out to Techland to see if the sequel will be on Linux.

Considering the original is one of my favourite games, I was hoping they would eventually confirm it for Linux again. Sadly though, they haven't yet made a decision.

Here's what they said to us when we emailed them:

About your question: I am afraid it is too early to give the definitive answer yet as our development team is working hard on Dying Light 2. Confirmed platforms are Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, but knowing that we have devoted Dying Light community on Linux, this version is definitely in their consideration.

So if you do want it on Linux, you should probably let them know.

With Chris Avellone as narrative designer this MUST be even better than part 1.

In case they'll not port it to Linux we have WINE + DXVK ;)

Yes, but we should only pay if the hard work is made by the developer...

And will just give them the excuse they need to not port it to Linux.

Just sent them email about it, even though this is not my type of gamer at all. Would still buy if for Linux to show appreciation

Oh no I won't!! Lol. I've got just a smidge fewer than 250 hours in the first one and still go back into completed games just to run about cleaving zombies. It's therapeutic. Watching anything about DL2---without Techland's assurances that it'll be coming to Linux---is simply too painful for me to contemplate.

Never had any problem playing Dying Light on my Linux rigs. Played on Debian and Mint Linux, using a range of Nvidia graphics cards ( GTX960, GTX970, GTX1070, GTX1080TI ). In my early days of playing it, I was using an AMD FX8350 processor, and it was one of the most graphically stunning and smoothest games on that processor. The FX8350 is 8-core and suited to well-threaded code, whereas many (other) games favour a very fast single core, where the FX processor is pretty underwhelming compared to Intel's core processors. Thankfully, AMD's Ryzen processors do a good job of redressing the balance and are amazing for multi-threaded code.

Currently play Dying Light on Ryzen 5 1600, GTX1080TI, 4K resolution, and maxxed out graphical settings. Thumbs up Techland for all your hard work on it. Really want the new game to come to Linux.

My own perspective on games which don't come to Linux - I don't buy them until they are *very* reduced in sales, e.g. 80% discount. So, if you want full money off me, make sure it comes to Linux. (I'm looking at you, Flying Wild Hog - Shadow Warrior 2 - still not bought that yet.)

Quoting: GuestI bought Dying Light one year ago. Actual play time 0 minutes, it never worked on my machine, neither with Mesa or Mesa-git. So if they release it for Linux, they hopefully make it work as well. Otherwise I can't see what's the difference to a Windows only release. I paid the full price for this game, but so far I got 0 fun and 0 service. Technology wise I hope they go Vulkan only for Dying Light 2 to reduce bugs.

Did you change the Launch Options in Steam to "MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.5 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=450 %command%"? This is needed for it to start on Mesa since it tries to open v4.5 of the compat profile instead of the proper core profile.

I rly hope that DL2 comes with Linux support, I love 1st and its DLC and have played it through few times on co-op with my friend.

Yes, I did. But it doesn't help, there is just a black loading screen. And in some days in mesa-git this workaround will be obsolete :-)

Strange, I had that exactly that black loading screen until I changed the launch options... Don't remember if I did anything else, since you are on mesa-get I believe that you are on 18.x since they also did some workaround in 17.x to get Dying Light to work.

It's a really buggy game though, currently I'm stuck near the end of The Following since the game crashes as soon as I reach a certain point (the granary) which apparently also happens for people on Windows and PS4 so not even with a better port it would be completely stable.

edit: btw do you have this section in /etc/drirc:
        <application name="Dying Light" executable="DyingLightGame">
            <option name="allow_glsl_builtin_variable_redeclaration" value="true" />
        </application>

edit2: seams like others on Arch also have problems with this game: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/forum/topic/2766/post_id=15355
