Steam Play Proton 5.0-4 is up fixing Origin, GTA V, Denuvo and more

By - | Views: 37,187

Another new release of Steam Play's Proton software is up and while small in number of changes, it's quite a mighty update overall.

Looking to get started with Steam Play on Linux? Have no idea what it is? Be sure to check our previous beginners guide for some tips and explanations. We'll be keeping that up to date with any major changes.

Here's the major changes for Proton 5.0-4 out now:

  • EA's Origin launcher is now functional and Jedi Fallen Order is playable.
  • Fix crash on launch in Grand Theft Auto V Online.
  • Fix Denuvo DRM failures in Just Cause 3 and Batman Arkham Knight.
  • Update DXVK to v1.5.5.
  • Improve performance when emulating display resolution changes.
  • Improve performance in Monster Hunter World.
  • Fix mouse cursor issue on focus loss in Ryse: Son of Rome.
  • Improve game launch times.

You can see the changelog here.

If you don't see it turn up yet in your Steam client, you can try restarting as that usually gets it to appear and make sure you have Proton 5.0 installed in the Tools section of Steam.

As a reminder: we also had a statement recently from Valve, to clarify that Proton is correctly tracking Linux sales if you missed that.

Quoting: F.UltraAny one having any idea how to go about installing Origin in steam? Are one to install it as an external 3d party game and then just launch it and proton will then run on all games installed via Origin or must the game be one of the steam games that comes with Origin?
You don't need Steam at all for this. You could try Lutris which has an installer for Dead Space 3.

Although to be honest, with all of the games to choose from, I wouldn't bother spending my money on Origin on a game that may or may not work.

I just don't want to have to install yet another thing like Lutris, would much prefer to have it all done by Steam. I've got enough tinkering going on by being a full time dev at work :)

The thing with Origin is that both Dead Space 3 and Mass Effect 3, both of which are keen game franchises for me, are Origin exclusive.

And I already have an Origin account due to my daughter wanted to play Sims 4 some years ago.

In my case, it's a game I already own from long ago, so I might as well give the Lutris method a shot.

Yeah if you already own it I guess that you don't want to purchase them once more :)

I can relate. But still Steam is not the right tool here. Steam manages Proton configurations for the games that it knows. To add a third party non-native application, you would have to create your own Proton prefix manually, just like with regular Wine. You would also do all the tweaking manually, which is not fun. Lutris is exactly the installer you are looking for if you want to avoid messing around with all of that.

Just reporting back to say that Dead Space 3 installed and ran fine via the Lutris config. Pretty cool how much stuff works in Linux these days! I thought I said goodbye forever to my Origin games.

Ok, you convinced me. I'm going to try out Lutris.

Did it work without any problems for you? When I first launched it I experienced constant stutters once per second both in video and audio like the game paused for 100ms every second. Then on the next launch it was all smooth sailing, but unfortunately every other time that I've launched it since then the stuttering have reappeared.

Have not been able to find out what the cause is, have however found many threads on the Internet from Windows users experiencing the same thing back in the day so it's probably the game itself that have some kind of problems.
