Civilization VI cross-play to return June 25 with a huge update

By - | Views: 17,006

It is now confirmed that not only will Civilization VI be getting a massive update on June 25, cross-platform online play will also properly return too.

Firaxis Games themselves put out a post on Twitter, confirming this last week and then replying to us to mention that includes Linux. Aspyr Media, who ported it to Linux and macOS also confirmed this on Twitter too. This is going to be good news, since the recent updates prevented many people playing together.

Additionally, on June 25 Civilization VI will be getting a huge update. This is part of the new development cycle that Civilization VI is going through with the New Frontier Pass, as they do a DLC -> Update -> DLC loop for the next year. What's coming? The Red Death Battle Royale mode is getting a second season with Aliens and Zombies. If you've not played Red Death, it's surprisingly fun actually. Actor Sean Bean will also be returning to add in some narration to the Red Death mode.

The update will also fix a few exploits in the normal Civilization VI gameplay. Firaxis said to expect the full notes when the update launches.

You can pick up a copy of Civilization VI on Humble Store and Steam.

At least Civ 6 vanilla cross-play is working fine for me and plenty of other people as of now.
They literally only check four strings in a property file...

The only problem as of now is, that only Steam (Linux) to Steam (Windows) seems to work properly, since the Linux version does not have a join by code button in the multiplayer menu. Therefore only Steam friends are invitable via the ingame invite.

Other that that it is just working. No sync issues, no "version mismatch", victories are working as expected.

I played several rounds with my friend on Windows. Just faked the version strings in: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid\ Meier\'s\ Civilization\ VI/aspyrassets/global/string/app.json

(version to 1.0.1.501, version str to 504666). That's literally all...

And at least as important, bring back cross play!

Nice to see Aspyr is still providing support for some of their Linux games.
