Children of Morta adds Linux support and a new animal charity DLC

By - | Views: 18,693

Coming up on a year since the original release, Children of Morta from developer Dead Mage and publisher 11 bit studios has now formally added Linux support.

Children of Morta is an action RPG with a rogue-lite approach to character development, where you don’t play a single character - but a whole, extraordinary family of heroes. Hack’n’slash through hordes of enemies in procedurally generated dungeons, caves and lands and lead the family of Bergsons, with all their flaws and virtues, against the forthcoming Corruption.

In the update announcement, they mentioned this:

We have some great news for our Linux community, too! It took us some time - but we've finally managed to add Linux to the list of supported systems! If you're using Ubuntu 16.04+ the game should run just fine but we highly recommend Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (or any newer version than that).

The Linux version comes along with a free Treasure Pack update to the main game, which adds in new content. Additionally, a new paid charity DLC is out with Children of Morta: Paws and Claws that will see 100% of the proceeds going to the Humane Society International charity, whose main mission is to help animals all over the world. Paws and Claws adds in these new features:

  • Animal Shelter system - adds a whole new section of the house!
  • A herd of varied animals will visit the family’s house - deer, fox, birds, and more.
  • New mechanic - use treats to feed animals and look after them.
  • New special animal-related boosts (XP Gain, Movement Speed, and more) available for the Bergsons.
  • New home interactive events
  • More than 100 new animations, big and small, showing you the life of your new animal friends!

As of right now, the Steam purchase on Linux results in an empty download, as they forgot to add Steam store purchases to the Linux content depot on Steam. This is an error many developers make, which we wrote about previously. We've let them know to fix it soon hopefully. Will update when it's fixed. Updated: fixed.

We'll be taking a good look at it soon. Really great to see another crowdfunded title deliver on more of its promises.

You can buy it from Humble Store and Steam. Hopefully they will also put it up on GOG.

Awesome, I've been looking at this ever since it came out, awaiting a Linux release. Bought it last night, ofc including the DLC, and so far I'm really enjoying it.

The art style is absolutely stunning.

Well, just reporting in to say how absolutely incredible this game is. The gameplay is excellent, but you "dip into" each session, rarely lasting more than 20 minutes or so per play. In between plays, not only is there a deep progression of character unlocks, skills and upgrades, but also a wonderful, often heart-wrenching, story about the game's protagonists, the family Bergson. The narrator is particularly excellent, and much of the story is revealed through unlocks during your playthrough, invoking instant in-game cut-scenes, later expanded upon when you return to the house.

It's superb. It's... top ten material, honestly. I'm blown away.

I'm generally somewhat indifferent about retro/pixel art style games, but this one is exceptionally done--especially the animations. I'd put this in the same top tier class of pixel art as Fez, Hyper Light Drifter, or Superbrothers: S&S.

Plus, Humane Society International is a worthy charity that I've worked with and can absolutely vouch for.

We've just bought it with my buddy, hoping play in Coop.
Finally we first both played 1 hour by our side first, because the game is just beautiful and each run give some story motivation.
Just want to play more. First boss still resist.
But finnaly we try to play together in coop as the game says it's possible, but we can't find a way to do it. Even with "Steam Play together", Steam controller did work here (linux version or other problem, don't know). It's not the place to find/ask for game support, but if someone are able to play coop with linux over steam, I'll be please to know.
Cheers

Edit : On the same computer controler works, I'm able to play in coop. Just check the good check box for desktop controler on Steam setting, and at the select player screen Player 2 is available ! So nice !
