Commandos 2 - HD Remaster due for Linux PC support 'this Winter'

By - | Views: 20,583

Like a lot of things across this year, the actual Linux PC version of Commandos 2 - HD Remaster has been pushed back to this Winter.

Commandos 2 - HD Remaster is a revamp of the original and much loved 2002 strategy game from Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive. Kalypso Media now own the rights, so with Yippee! Entertainment they worked to produce an updated version with higher resolution art, reworked controls, a fresh UI and a new tutorial.

The Linux (and macOS/Switch) version was originally due in the Spring after the whole game was delayed from 2019 to 2020, then they pushed it back to the Fall and now they've confirmed on Twitter that it will be happening this Winter. No reason given at any point but with the COVID19 outbreak all sorts of delays are to be expected across the industry.

Feature Highlight:

  • Re-imagined in HD with reworked controls, modernized UI and overhauled tutorial.
  • Interactive environments: steal enemy uniforms and weapons, climb poles, swing from cables, swim, utilize vehicles, and climb in/out of buildings, ships and planes.
  • Control nine unique commandos, each with different skills and specializations including green beret, sniper, demolition expert, diver, seductress and thief.
  • The Commandos series’ first appearance in a modern 3D Engine: rotate the environment 360 degrees, move seamlessly in and out of buildings, submarines, planes and underwater, and zoom in and out of the environment.
  • Authentic WWII scenarios: 10 missions spanning 9 different environments in night and day, with realistic weather effects.
  • The choice is yours: how you tackle each mission is up to you. Experiment with skills and weapons in a challenging “against the odds” gameplay style.
  • WWII vehicles and weapons, including jeeps, tanks, trucks, ships, bazookas and flame-throwers.

Hopefully by then some of the lingering issues will have been solved, as it didn't get the best reception at release and still even now it sounds like it's got a long list of bugs.

You can follow / buy it on Humble Store, GOG and Steam.

With all the issues people have been complaining about, I don't mind the delays, if that means we'll get a more polished experience. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it past Saving Private Smith this time, with the use of video guides, since that made me rage quit back in the day. Loved the normal gameplay; hated the invasion sequences.

I'm also hoping the Linux version of Desperados 3 will be released soon, since we're getting close to the end of the summer, which was the estimated time frame from the announcement.

Hardly authentic WW2 when they deliberately censored the whole fact that you are actually fighting against Axis powers.

I don't think anyone ever played this game for its authenticity, and I doubt the removal of some racial symbols will make it any less fun.

I don't know what version you've played, but the original versions in Spain -where the original developers were from- the games had all kinds of real symbology.

I am obviously talking about the remaster. The original is fine.

Got fondest memories of the first one. Never played the second installment cos I think my rig back in 2002 would have hard time pulling off those HI-Res supah-detailed backgrounds... or for some other reasons. And in a couple of years I went to Uni and switched to Linux.. Just 20-odd yrs to catch up

I just don't understand why people get so worked up over it. There are hate groups to this day who use these symbols, so I understand why the developer wants to avoid using them, and I doubt doing so takes any fun out of the game, so what's the big deal? This game was never big on realism anyway.

Because some people have principles and understand context. Racial symbols... what does that even mean? We aren't talking propaganda here, the game obviously doesn't spread any hateful messages by displaying the symbols. That's a huge shortcut you took there. Censorship of history is just wrong, period. It is slippery slope to something worse around the corner. This exact kind of thinking is the reason why the creators of Attentat 1942 have so many problems distributing their game. You just wave your hand over it, because you want to play a game and have fun, but it is shortsighted point of view. Among other things I already mentioned... an obvious one... people also take issue when someone needlessly fucks with their beloved games.

Also your comments about realism... ehm... what can I say here? You want to claim that the game is not suppose to be about WW2 or what? What are we talking about here? The setting of the game is real and the game makes it clear enough. Is it just more hand waving? I am not trying to convince you not to play the game, but you being baffled by people taking issue with it is slightly concerning. The reason why I mentioned it in the first place is so people know and can decide for themselves. For me it is a no buy, no matter how many penguins in nazi uniforms they add to the game.
