Amnesia: Rebirth from Frictional Games confirmed for launch on October 20

By - | Views: 16,436

The latest horror experience from Frictional Games with Amnesia: Rebirth now has an official release date of October 20 with Linux support.

Just when you were planning for a quiet and casual 2020 Halloween right? Well, think again. Time to get your spare pants at the ready. Amnesia: Rebirth is a sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent released back in 2010 so it's releasing not too far off the 10th anniversary.

In the new trailer to go along with the announcement, we get a short look into the twisted story behind Amnesia: Rebirth. The protagonist, Tasi Trianon, finds herself in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert, battling against her fears and pain as she seeks out answers. She must do everything and anything to survive. She is Tasi.

"Amnesia is not just another haunted house spook-fest, but an emotionally harrowing journey", explains Thomas Grip, creative director at Frictional Games. "We aim to go beyond simple jump-scares and to affect players on a deeper level. While Rebirth will contain the terrifying encounters and sights you expect from an Amnesia game, it has a lot more focus on narrative than previous entries in the series. We want the player to form a strong bond with Tasi and intimately share her tribulations. This will not be your run-of-the-mill horror experience."

This was originally meant to be released in 2017 and then 2018 and then that didn't happen as the project continued to grow. Starting off small, they said how they didn't want their own sequel to The Dark Descent to be just a side project and ensure they expanded on it properly. With many new horror games on the market since the original, they needed to ensure it wouldn't be lost in the crowd and actually stand out. Rebirth will see you travel through "a wide variety of uncanny environments, from scorched deserts and dark caves to forgotten ruins and alien landscapes" and it sure sounds like it's going to be good.

You can pre-order now on GOG and Steam.

The Frictional-approved Amnesia Remastered mod is up, and it's glorious. Get it here https://www.moddb.com/mods/amnesia-the-dark-descent-remastered

you have to place the included main_settings.cfg in ~.frictionalgames/Amnesia/Main for it to actually work, and work it very much does.

I really enjoyed SOMA, I hope they make more like that one (perhaps this will have some similar elements).

Came for rebirth, left with a dark decent. Thank you! I was not aware of this mod, but now, I shall be replaying the original Dark Descent until rebirth is out.

So, this was kind of a rebirth of the good old game. :)

so that's what they've been up to.. a tad disappointed, bc of the three games Amnesia came the least to my liking. But oh well, guess have to get it anyway. These guys been too good to not to. After all SOMA couldn't have a meaningful sequel anyways, guess I'd prefer a game in the Penumbra universe, or a whole new world from them.

Frictional are (for me) the absolute masters of horror. I hate horror games. I love Frictional games. Really looking forward to this! In kind of the same way most of us look forward to doing a bungie jump!

I have very odd feelings about this. I bought, played and loved every Penumbra game from the day they released the first tech demo. I liked the idea of Amnesia, bought it on release, but didn't play it beyond maybe half an hour, probably because you are genuinely defenseless. I'm playing it, in full, for the first time now because of this mod and appreciating rather than enjoying. And the sound. By the Gods that cockroach-crunching sound has me squirming to the marrow. That sound is significantly worse than being killed by the monsters. As game design goes it's utterly superb.

I will play through Machine when I'm done, and finally hit SOMA.

Meanwhile, you may be aware Penumbra: Necrologue is available on Steam as a standalone Amnesia fan-mod

They are the only game studio I will automatically give my money. They've 100% earned that trust. Not even the mighty CDPR have that place in my gaming heart.

Just wait until the splashing...

I love A:tDD and I hate horror. I don't think there's another game that scared me more than the first amnesia. The first outlast came close (+1 for its Linux support) but neither the second outlast, SOMA, or Amnesia: a machine for pigs have had that same impact on me. I do need to check out the penumbra series as well as force myself through SOMA.

naturally.
being killed => reloading is rarely if ever fun.
teasing horror is >>>>> jump scares / zombies / etc. ie actually interacting with it.
too bad it seems only a few game designers adhere to this simple (and tbh the only viable) strategy.
