A racing game inspired by the likes of Outrun that's so completely bonkers it even has a car vs car fighting mode? Buck Up And Drive! is clearly hilarious. Created by developer Fábio Fontes, they explain that it's a "playable shitpost, that’s what it is!" and well, that's not even a bad description.

We need a little bit more to go on than that though right? It's an endless runner type of game with vehicles. You're high-score chasing while doing some ridiculous things like mid-air flips over trucks and it's wrapped up a wonderful retro inspired style.

Features:

  • Endless driving game inspired by arcade classics, with simple yet intense gameplay featuring a total slap in the face of realism. And a kick in the spleen, too!
  • Procedurally generated track with multiple environments to visit, ranging from the somewhat realistic to the completely absurd. GO TO HELL!... literally!
  • PINK. BACKFLIPPING. TRUCKS. ON THE FUCKING MOON.
  • Go 1v1 against another player (or a CPU) in a fighting mode. With cars. I dunno either, I came up with it while in the shower.
  • Customizable car decals through external image files. Put "eggplants" all over the cars, for all I care!
  • Controls for both game modes are a d-pad and a button. Play one-handed, if you want!
  • Available for both Windows and Ubuntu (other Linux distros may work).
  • After the game is on Steam (will take a bit though), I will let those that buy the game here to claim a Steam key later!
  • More features to be added through updates.

The developer seems quite positive on doing a Linux native build too, mentioning on Twitter how "All it took was digging out an old PC, so kind of a no-brainer!".

You can try out a demo on itch.io and pre-order. It's due for release in August 2021.

This one is pretty hilarious and sounds really spontaneous!

Outside the digital realm, there was a classic tabletop tactical game called "Car Wars" which eventually got a roleplaying game version. Just saying, there's always been an appeal to fighting cars. Taps into primal urges to machine-gun that fink tailgating you on the freeway.

I like the art style a lot, I just hope that playing it feels right.

It looks great and fun, but when I read "endless" and "randomly generated" I look at it a bit worried, worse if it's a racing game.

Dirt 4 for example, AMAZING game, I really love it, but the random aspect is a downside. The system is well implemented, some tracks is amazing but impossible to be memorable and you probably will not play a similar track, another problem is that is annoying to see a exact same curve in two completely different places, which happens a lot once you played all regions.

Y'know, I had dinner with Steve Jackson once.
A friend of mine had put together a game tournament of sorts to run at the local game convention, and he was using GURPS, and he tapped me to GM one of the sessions. It was an interesting idea--basically, he had an overarching plot involving this McGuffin that everyone was after, and three disparate groups getting embroiled in it, mostly separate but ultimately in conflict. So there were three game masters at three tables, plus my friend was co-ordinating and there were a couple of floaters going back and forth between tables to see where things were at. Well, it was a GURPS Cyberpunk game, and Steve Jackson was a guest of honour at the con, and he was giving a talk about how the US Secret Service raided Steve Jackson Games and took all their computers and stuff because they thought GURPS Cyberpunk was a hacking manual. He was main pissed off, they'd actually done a lot of financial damage to Steve Jackson Games because they were trying to police hacking stuff without actually having the faintest clue about it.
I guess because it was a good fit, or maybe he thought it was interesting--anyway, he came to our little tournament and was one of the sort of roving GMs. Afterwards he and about half a dozen of us went for sushi--he had never had sushi and wanted to try it. Seemed like a nice guy; there was a lot of pretty typical gamer-nerd conversation.
