520 games are now rated either Verified or Playable for Steam Deck

By - | Views: 42,346

As we hit less than two weeks until the Steam Deck launch on February 25, Valve appear to be doing well on the testing front with 520 games now either fully Verified or Playable.

Each day now a good bunch seem to trickle in together. At this rate of progress per-day, we're perhaps going to see close to 1,000 either Verified or Playable by launch. That is, unless this is all still early testing of their processes and we might see a bigger bump closer to launch which is entirely possible. Either way, it's already a rather nice number. The amount only tells so much though, quality over quantity of course and there's a lot of good picks already.

The totals currently are 309 Verified, 211 Playable and 60 Unsupported. Two days ago there were only 243 Verified!

Here's the current Verified list at time of writing:

The big thing to remember is that any of this can change before launch, it's not a final list and games can be updated at any time to change their rating. That's true now and will be so after release.

For the Unsupported list, there's a few now noted due to the anti-cheat not supporting Linux / Proton like: Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and Back 4 Blood.

You can see the lists easily on the unofficial SteamDB:

Also, the useful ProtonDB website (also unofficial) that tracks Proton compatibility for the whole of Linux had some upgrades lately like a very handy Anti-Cheat list.

VERIFIED: 9 games (3.81%)
PLAYABLE: 13 games (5.51%)
UNSUPPORTED: 0 games (0.0%)
UNKNOWN: 214 games (90.68%)

Not much to be said for my library so far. The verified titles aren't bad, but the playable ones is an all-star list with many of my all time favorites. Which is... not that great, but not unexpected. I expect those to be at least playable because yeah, I play them on linux already, on much weaker hardware. But the most likely problem is controller support, as strategy games aren't usually well suited for a controller without much adaptation. Perhaps seeing text and information on the small screen is an issue for some.

I half hope that this is sorted out for at least some of those games, or that at least they work with teaks. But I don't expect my library will have a huge percentage of "verified" titles when it's all done.

Quoting: ElectricPrismWe already know from ProtonDB.com that the overwhelming majority of games are running on Desktop Linux (Save multiplayer infested with DRM Anticheat)

I'm sure the Approved list will grow fast since it's mostly just a UI Mod & Full Controller support and I look forward to having more consistency so my games can be fully managed without keeb and mouse.

ProtonDB includes the use of "proprietary" external tools (mf, wmv, tools that are illegal by their respective licenses) or modified versions of Proton, such as ProtonGE or Proton-TKG, the verification is done with a "click and play", and the result depends on whether the game is compatible with the Steam Deck controls, performance, or that you start the game but have problems with the sound or similar.

Quoting: denyasisWell, yes. I believe a Windows build is still required to release on Steam. No Linux exclusive releases.

I understand that is no longer policy, although it did used to be. Most games are going to be made available for Windows because marketshare. The number of all games currently on Steam is 64,289, and the number of Windows games is 64,270.

QuotePerhaps with the Deck, that has changed, hopefully.

They said during the dev conference that they don't want Deck exclusives. The big objective is to demonstrate the viability of Linux as a gaming platform to all those Windows gamers out there with their existing Steam libraries, rather than to sell lots of units.

Pretty much what i expected. A great launch for a new mobile gamingdevice.

I hope that the steam deck will be a success and helps PC gaming adoption in the mobile gaming field.

However the potential impact of the deck on linuxgaming in general will be limited in my opinion. Valve chose a linux based OS for this device for the same reason Google chose it as a base for Android and Chrome OS.

Sure you can modify the deck in many ways because it is not a locked down device. The general purpose of the deck is to use it as a handheld gamingdevice giving you access to games from the steamstore that are suitable for this kind of gamingexperience.

The numbers of steamusers using "linux" will grow once the steam deck is released. But that doesn't mean that your unsupported desktop gaming hardware will soon be officially supported for linux or anything else in that regard. Developers that have decided to support the deck are only targeting this specific device not desktop linuxgaming in general.

That will be a problem to some degree, but not necessarily a huge one. For instance, in the initial rush of native games around the whole Steam Machine thing, I have the definite impression that various distros kind of converged in their gaming-stuff support . . . in the general direction of whatever Ubuntu was doing, mostly, but they did a fair amount of "what it takes not to be that distro the games don't run on". Plus stuff like SDL2 matured and got better known. I expect the same will be true for this, although it will be to make sure Proton runs fine and it will be more towards Arch.

There could be some hardware problems, particularly due to troubles with NVidia drivers, because the Deck uses AMD. But it's not like the games were built solely for the Deck, they were built to run on PC hardware, which is the same hardware all the Linux gamers are using. So probably not huge hardware issues, just a few corner cases with driver problems.

I still fear even if they've got several thousands of games at launch, which no console ever had, the headings will still be not be "Look at this incredible launch!" but "Not all Steam games supported!"

Quoting: pete910Never had a native break, Only problem I have had is them abandoning them! Am looking at you Gearbox !!

Cant say I've had a lot of luck with proton on native builds. I have tried running borderlands 2 through proton but it's a terrible experience compared to the native.

This is strange, my experience with BL 2 is quite exactly the opposite. I was surprised to see that Proton now even manages to show the desktop launcher (I once had forgotten to switch that launcher files). Performance was way better with Proton, and I also noticed that some effects seem to be missing in the native version, which looked kind of dull in comparison.

Many more of my native games just work better with Proton, for example Dead Island, Dying Light, Trine, ETS 2, Thalos Principle.

I am not talking about graphics driver issues. Just get yourself a random Gaming Mouse, Keyboard or a Gamecontroller and try to get it working as it does on Windows. I bought myself a wired Nacon Controller. Since this device is listed as an official X-Box Series/One Controller i thought it would work out of the box given the fact that the XPad Kerneldriver has support for those controllers if they are connected over USB. At the end i had to install the Xone driver and had to configure the controller manualy because steam doesn't detect it as an X-Box Controller. I also had to force steaminput on several games and disable it for others because the controller was not working as aspected.

As a Linuxuser i am OK with that. However most Windowsusers making this experience will stay away from linux, and i can clearly understand why.

The steam deck is one specific device which of course will be in good shape on Linux regarding the hardwarefunctionality. But that does not translate to all the gaming desktop / Notebooks and gaming hardware available.

Which had to be expected i'd say. The games available on Steam are made for PC gaming in the first place. Games that come without gamepadsupport or that utilize complex menus with lots of text are clearly out of scope when it comes to the steamdeck. Also VR Games are not a thing either. And this limtations are not even a "linux thing".

Besides that there are also games on steam that are to expensive when it comes to hardwarerequirements to run at a playable performance at all on the steam deck.

To assume that just every pc game on steam could run on a handheld/mobiledevice is just unrealistic in my opinion.

Am using a AMD card, That's probably the diff. Theses OSS drivers are mega
