Fashionably late on this one. Wine 7.13 rolled out just before the weekend rolled in, so here's a quick run down of what's new in this Windows compatibility layer.

This is the compatibility layer that allows you to run various Windows applications and games on Linux (and forms part of Steam Play Proton). Once a year or so, a new stable release is made but the development versions are usually fine to use.

Highlights:

  • Gecko engine updated to version 2.47.3.
  • USB driver converted to PE.
  • Some theming improvements.
  • Various bug fixes.

They're getting close to finishing the PE conversion now, which should bring compatibly improvements. Previously Wine has built its Win32 libraries (like DLLs and EXEs) as ELF but for many reasons (like better compatibility) they've started to move them over to use PE instead.

For bug fixes they noted problems solved with: The Witcher 3, Photoshop C 2018, CLIP Studio Paint, SnowRunner, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1, Skyrim Legendary Edition, Wizard101, Wireshark and others.

Compatibility, bah. I think they just don't like Elves. It's prejudice, I tell you!

Is the Gecko engine the same as the Mozilla Firefox Gecko or do they just share the same name?

It's the same engine.

Thank you. For anyone curious as to why, the explainer is on their wiki:

QuoteWine implements its own version of Internet Explorer. The implementation is based on a custom version of Mozilla's Gecko Layout Engine.
