You can now play DOOM as the Cat from Stray

Yes this is a real thing, DOOM modders will quite literally do anything and I'm here loving it. You can now play DOOM as the cat from Stray.

It's not the most in-depth mod out there and it's another mostly silly one, but still somewhat amusing to try out. Playing DOOM as a cat in third-person is not what I had in mind when starting my day that's for sure. The developer said they are planning numerous improvements and additions like multiplayer, more cats, more effects, more cat abilities like scratching and drinking, the actual Doomguy as a combat partner to pet you and more.

To run it on Linux / Steam Deck you just need a copy of GZDoom installed, with a DOOM wad file in the correct folder. Download the zip file from the Mod DB page and place it next to your DOOM wad, this would usually be in:

./config/gzdoom

Or if you've installed via Flatpak (like on a Steam Deck):

.var/app/org.zdoom.GZDoom/.config/gzdoom/strayDoom.v01.zip

Then run it (using terminal command as an example or use your favourite launcher) with:

GZDoom -file strayDoom.v01.zip

Or if you've installed via Flatpak (like on a Steam Deck):

flatpak run org.zdoom.GZDoom -file strayDoom.v01.zip

You can also use Luxtorpeda with Doom, if you own it on Steam, using one of the launcher options. Could make it easier to manage using the mod, versus using the command line.

Stray Doom works with Doom and Doom II (DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD).

Funny... It even works with Heretic, but then the color scheme is all messed up, except for the cat.

Quotethe actual Doomguy as a combat partner to pet you
They should make a variation where it’s a mini Doomguy and the cat pets him
