Welcome to the new and much the same GamingOnLinux

By - | Views: 36,277

New server who dis? Hello again. GamingOnLinux just did a full server migration and so if you’re seeing this, welcome back home, please wipe your feet at the door.

We’ve successfully moved over to AlmaLinux from a nearing EOL CentOS, to ensure that GamingOnLinux can continue operating long into the future on a modern server software platform. That and the server is all clean, shiny and ever-so-slightly better than the previous one. I also took this time to add in some increased security options and an extra backup system too.

I would like to use this moment to give a huge thank you to all our supporters for keeping the lights on! You’re wonderful, beautiful people — the best people. And of course thank you to everyone who joins in commenting on articles and entering the depths of the Forum.

Want to help support GamingOnLinux? See below!

Firstly, the best way is regular support via Patreon. For Patreon, a suggestion is to pledge around the start of a month, as it charges at the beginning of every month. Generally the Patreon is just to have regular funding to keep bringing you the news (and some videos on YouTube - you can also be a YouTube Member!).

All other donations, without any special rewards can be done by:

You can also bookmark and buy games using our affiliate/partner links (and they really do help!):

You can find all the links to support us on our dedicated page any time.

Thank you for continuing to read and support GamingOnLinux!

A quick extra reminder: you can click every single tag on an article, to show a full feed of articles with that tag. Each tag also has an RSS feed attached to it like these examples with Open Source or Distro News or Native Linux or Steam Deck. So you can easily use an RSS feed of what you want, or bookmark specific tags to visit.

Did you also notice the Thunderbird banner recently? We have 1 slot on Patreon to get a little extra funding from a single sponsor and Thunderbird graciously offered to join for a little while. Big thank you to Thunderbird for the support!

Please report general issues and suggestions via this forum.

Quoting: GroganCongrats on the smooth move (no, this isn't an Ex-Lax advert lol) :-)
It was pretty dashed smooth, wasn't it? Normally I expect a bit of weird stuff during a transition.

I try to give your twitch channel my prime subscription every month.
I hope you financially benefit from that :)

I'm always too paranoid to do it that way, but if you're moving to another rig with an appropriate version of Cpanel (i.e. an expected upgrade path) and have done everything the "Cpanel way" (not going too far outside the box) in theory you should just be able to seamlessly restore the entire appliance using your backup archives. (or sites individually should be safer)

I've never tried it, because I'm always afraid of doing something that will make me lose control of the box and have to call the datacenter. Most often their solutions are to re-image, so I don't take leaps of faith on servers.

My big lesson... one time I had to coach a technician to poke and stab to boot the box to the old kernel after the network didn't come up with mine. He wasn't very knowledgeable and this was almost going to be a ticket for a re-image if not for that. This was in the Redhat 7.0 days (before RHEL, this was in 2002 that this happened to me), their silly init scripts wouldn't initialize the network if the NIC driver wasn't a module. My second build did, and it worked. This Slackware user (at the time) sure didn't like that lol. I was a lot more careful after that, it was our forum server and people were frantically emailing me telling me the site was down.

The page seems to load faster where I live. Maybe placebo effect, but it used to have some delay before displaying.
Congrats for the migration, and thanks as always for all the quality content you keep providing!

What made you go with AlmaLinux instead of Rocky Linux?

Do you think we have a reputation for being "picky"? I noped out of Linode back in the early 2010s when I tested their Slackware images and found they did some iffy things to the init scripts. It was long ago, I forget, but I didn't like it

Yes! Happy to see a non intrusive advertisement :)

Googled for a while, sounded like the better option and just more community focused overall. They both do the same thing so just a matter of what business model you prefer.
