Stealthy platformer Kiyo in need of Linux testers

Developer Pixel Rats emailed in about their stealthy platformer that now has a Playtest available on Steam, and they're requesting backup from Linux players to see how it runs across different systems.

More about it: "Sneak, fight and sabotage an evil bunny corporation in this stealthy platformer. Join a resistance group of animals trying to get their home planet back from the paws of evil rabbits. Master stealth, swing with ninja ropes, crack tricky puzzles and enjoy satirical humour!"

The developer mentioned they wrote their game engine from scratch, so it's vital they get as many people as possible to give it a go to ensure the eventual release works well. Check out the trailer showcase below:

Game Features (from Steam):

  • Semi-open overworld.
  • A complex story with a narrative alluding to real-life societal issues.
  • Stealth gameplay.
  • Dynamic lights and shadows that influence the gameplay.
  • Enemy AI that responds to visual, audio and environmental inputs (important while sneaking).
  • Physics-based ninja rope and archery.
  • Original synthwave soundtrack and immersive audio design.
  • Proprietary engine.
  • Pole dancing.

That's my bad, I could have worded that better!

In this instance, I meant I put a request in to join the beta. There was a request to join beta button, thus my phrasing also. It accepted me shortly after.

In terms of feedback, I gave the native build a brief spin, it booted and gave me a chuckle with the attention grab (I won't write what exactly, as to avoid spoilers) and then shut it down.

I'll have more time later to test further!

Edit: Also gave it a quick spin on the Steam Deck (OG version, not OLED), doesn't launch there. My guess is it's most likely the previous libc bug mentioned by others.

alright somehow steam linux runtime (scout) does work, i got to the main menu but i havent played the game yet, since i use linux with my macbook i could test the game on macos

Another one on the it's-not-launching-list here.

OS is the latest Linux mint (xfce), so this was to be expected if the libc issue hasn't been fixed yet.

Hi everybody, I'm hard at work to resolve the startup problem on older systems, as well as to add joypad support to the Linux version.
In the meantime we released a small patch with the following improvements suggested by the community:

1) Improved Keyboard controls
2) Increase deadly fall height (he's a feline after all)
3) Solved slowdown issue in Sewers section by temporarily disabling mud pipes
4) Improved intro music

More to come, stay tuned!

Sounds like I need to do some serious Wayland testing myself... thanks for letting me know.
Btw, if you press backspace in game you'll get a live perf graph - it should tell you whether the slowdown comes from the rendering (most likely) or something else.

Of course it's always good to support many different systems, but as a resort, you could narrow down your system requirements.

That's fine if forward looking (like, I don't support old drivers, x11, old glibc etc). Not a good idea if the requirements are that you can't use new stuff! That makes the game obsolete in no time.

General advice:

Link with the steam runtime, and that should fix a lot of compat stuff, or so I am led to believe.

Use SDL. Too many times I've seen people roll out their own input interface implemented separately for each OS. There are too many quirks, and you're going to get it wrong. SDL has already dealt with those quirks, just use that.
