By - | Views: 23,278

K-D Lab have revived their classic RTS, with PERIMETER: Legate Edition now available on Steam with full Native Linux support and it's even open source. This latest version of the game includes numerous enhancements, along with bundling the Emperor’s Testament expansion.

Nice to see more classic games getting a revival with some extra features!

Features from the newer edition:

  • Cross-platform compatibility: Windows, Linux.
  • "Emperor’s Testament" add-on included in the main game.
  • Support for widescreen monitors with almost any resolution. You can change the resolution without restarting the game, and in windowed mode, changing the window size dynamically adjusts the game resolution.
  • Full support for online multiplayer gaming.
  • Capability for multiplayer with more than 4 players (on special maps).
  • Enhanced textures and models.
  • Support for custom mods.
  • Improved game balance.
  • Availability of all frames from both Geometry of War and Emperor’s Testament, as well as electro-technologies in battles and multiplayer. New player colours added.
  • Numerous minor improvements and bug fixes.

Picking up a copy for myself, I can confirm it runs out of the box on Kubuntu 24.04 and performance is really good. Currently, there's no Vsync option, so it will run at multiple hundreds of FPS. So on Linux you may want to use Gamescope to manually limit it.

Available to buy on Steam. With the source code (GPL) on GitHub.

Also you can run an old version of the game through Luxtorpeda (it's a project that swaps the engines of certain games to a modern and native ones). I tried it some time before, seeing that they're modernized and opensourced the engine. Worked fine, but the gameplay seemed like a dated slog, even though I have a good memories about the game. Anyway, the game was and still is revolutionary and has very interesting ideas and mechanics that seem fresh to this day, especially considering that the whole RTS genre degraded and died soon after.

Sad reality is that this is so hard to be considered a feature. Especially with Vulkan.

Well, this is in comparison to the original game, which is from 2004.
My only complaint is that the only options seem to be using Steam or compiling from source. Would be nice if they sold it somewhere on an alternative such as Itch.io or GOG.
