Blending the worlds of survivor-like bullet heavens with vehicle building, TerraTech Legion firmly scratches the itch for something to pick up and play. Disclosure: a key was provided to GamingOnLinux.
If you have played any survivor-like (Vampire Survivors) you'll know the basics of what to expect. You go through multiple different levels, fending off never-ending waves of various types of enemies and try to last as long as possible. Here though you're also building up a killing-machine as you progress, block by block. There's just something so insanely satisfying about piecing together a vehicle, and then driving it around while all the guns are blazing tearing through the enemies that come running at you.
TerraTech Legion isn't just a case of survive for as long as you can though, each planet has a set of missions to do so you can get stars to unlock more of the game. That's where the extra challenge is with this one. Things like destroy a boss, or find some enemy base encounters and complete them and more.
As you progress through it, the vehicle building becomes quite the puzzle. The main building blocks simply give you more space to place down weapons and vehicle buffs, so it's a constant balancing act on where you place every single block to build up your machine. Placement matters a lot too. Lots of weapons only fire in a particular direction, or arc, while some will be able to fire anywhere. So each time you collect a new body block, you need to often rethink and reposition other blocks to make space for it. Building your vehicle during the round nicely breaks up the action too.
It's not just individual blocks, you also get upgrades that you can apply to weapons too giving you chance to boost a weapon you're particularly fond of.
Vehicle building is incredibly simple to do too and all of it works perfectly on controller. The blocks all nicely snap together, with camera controls that make it easy to spin around and zoom in / out to really get your vehicle the way you want it.
So how do you actually get all these fancy blocks? There's a few different ways. As you destroy enemies, they will drop points for you to collect to gain XP. If you level up, a package drops you need to drive to collect which will heal a certain percentage of your overall health, while also giving you a choice between a few new module blocks. Enemies will also randomly drop some blocks on death, and some fly around carrying packages you can destroy to collect whatever they were carrying too. Lots and lots of blocks, you'll end up with so many!
The extra challenge here is that each vehicle with their different type of wheels give a very different feeling on how they control, so each of them take a little bit of learning on how to make best use of them to rip through the enemy hordes. It's a bit comical in a way, especially once you add lots of wheels to a vehicle and lots of weapons and you can just spin it around doing doughnuts while your weapons auto-fire to bring the fireworks. So much destruction.
You even get multiple characters to unlock and try out each of them come with their own vehicle, skill tree and abilities.
Exploring the maps is also an essential here. There's quite a number of different enemy outposts you can roll through and destroy, with many buildings having multi-stages to break through and seeing the buildings come crumbling down is a nice touch.

Outside of the missions, once you've managed to grab 15 stars you can also unlock a Survive mode. Which is basically the end-game for you to keep jumping back into to build up an insane vehicle and just see how long you can last.

The game is absolutely flawless on Fedora KDE 44 with the latest Proton 11 Beta. It looks great and performs well.
Easily one of the best survivor-like bullet heavens available today and quite challenging too. This very quickly became my new favourite game to blast through whenever I have time for a break. An absolute no-brainer to go and pick up. A must have.
It's available now for £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99.
