Horripilant is a thoroughly unusual dungeon crawler that will make you feel quite uneasy blending in some elements from idler, puzzle and autobattler games. It will have Native Linux support at release built with Godot and the first public demo is live now.

This is one you need to try. I just love how thoroughly unusual it is, can't think of another dungeon crawler that has a mixture quite like this.

Features:

  • Incrementally gain and collect materials.
  • Combat horrific foes in the dungeon.
  • Solve puzzles and explore the depths of your camp.
  • Upgrade your gear to venture deeper.
  • Meet god and gain strong boons.

Story:

You awaken. An old, battered knight, lost in the darkest corners of an abandoned dungeon, with no memory of how you got there. The stench of decay permeates the thick air. The walls seem to whisper your name.

As you stir, a strange tree sprout catches your eye. You hit it, for the voice demands it of you; a twig breaks off onto the ground. With your newfound resource, you seem to be able to ameliorate your equipment. Distorted moans echo from an empty staircase. The voice calls to you again, beckoning you. You must go down. It is your purpose...

Encounter bizarre characters, solve cryptic puzzles, and survive the horrors that lurk in every shadow. Will you escape this living nightmare, or will it consume you?

I love that there is an audience for this type of stuff. I am a self-proclaimed super nerd, but this is beyond that pail. Also, I am loving seeing the COMMENTS link right below the article title now!

This, I like. Downloaded the demo, and it's definitely going on my wishlist.

The style is great and the mechanics are solid, if a bit vague in spots. I'd normally say that's a downside, but in a game like this you kind of want that feeling of not quite knowing what everything does right from the start.
