Another classic is returning, with Deus Ex Remastered getting announced for release on February 5th 2026 that aims to be the "definitive edition".

It's another from Aspyr Media who were responsible for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, STAR WARS: Bounty Hunter, STAR WARS: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles, STAR WARS: Battlefront Classic Collection, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered and others.

From the press release:

  • EXPERIENCE A WORLD ON THE BRINK: Explore real-world locations in a thrilling cyberpunk tale of conspiracy and intrigue, including post-crash New York, the neon alleys of Hong Kong, shadowy Parisian strongholds, the clandestine Area 51 and more.
  • PLAY YOUR WAY: Customize your character to fit your playstyle. Every challenge has more than one solution – breach locked systems, hack firewalls, cloak and vanish, deploy raw firepower and more. Your choices ensure no two playthroughs are ever the same.
  • NEW! VISUAL ENHANCEMENTS: Explore expansive environments with improved lighting, dynamic shadows, water physics, particle effects, and fully updated textures that breathe new life into our dystopian future.
  • NEW! REBUILT CHARACTER MODELS: Immerse yourself in Deus Ex’s rich character development systems like never before, with brand-new character models featuring smoother lip-sync animations and ragdoll physics.
  • NEW! QUALITY-OF-LIFE ENHANCEMENTS: Autosaves, faster loading, achievement tracking, and cloud saves on supported platforms.
  • NEW! CONTROLLER SUPPORT: Experience a new control scheme optimized from the ground up for modern controllers, designed for fluid weapon management and streamlined navigation.
  • NEW! MULTI-SCREEN SUPPORT: Enjoy 4K-ready UI with ultrawide and multi-monitor display support.

The reception so far doesn't exactly seem too positive, the YouTube comments are filled with complaints about how it looks. Same with the Steam forum, although that's not surprising, the Steam forums are often a mess on a lot of games. You're probably going to be unimpressed with me at this point, but I actually haven't played the original. I know, I know - there's still so many classics I haven't found the time for. Big fan of the modern games though, shame we won't see a proper conclusion.

Worth noting that the original Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition is currently less than £1 on Steam until September 29th. And, if you pair it up with the Deus Ex: Revision mod, you're already getting a pretty good looking and much loved community remaster.

I mean....it looks fine to me. Then again, I am not a graphics whore, never was.

That's gonna make choosing one version even harder. I haven't played Deus Ex either, and I was conflicted between choosing vanilla, Revision and GMDX. Now comes this.

Deus Ex is the greatest game of all time. Anyone with a computer device and can understand English should experience it. This remaster appears more or less worthless, maybe it's good for modern console players, as the ported PS2 release of the game has a few differences from the original PC game, I heard.

Obviously vanilla for first time playthrough. You're out to start with the actual game, not someone else's version of it.

I got too late to the game, and vanilla didn't do it for me. Revision was better, but also felt outdated. I hope I can finally get hooked with this version.
This looks fine to me; looking at some of the comments I was fearing it was going to be like the badly lighted, lumpy upscaled abomination that was on the GTA III 'definitive editions', especially when they first came out.

If they make the controls a little less floaty, and non-lethal gameplay a little less impossibly difficult (?!), that would be improvement enough, IMHO. Also eliminating the need for Kent's launcher, which has done great service over the years making the game playable on newer systems of course.

DX was an imbalanced game when it came out with branches in the skill tree that didn't make sense, very strange damage points for the weapons, and even stranger upgrade paths -- but IMHO, all of that contributed to it feeling less like a homogenized playground experience and a bit more like a sim. So I hope they don't go around over-correcting too much.

edit -- oh, and the ridiculously over the top accents for the locals in Hong Kong & Paris -- don't ever change them; I mean, they were so funny no one ever got offended by them, I don't think.

Ugh, Aspyr. My hopes for this just plummeted. This should have been done by Nightdive. I agree that the Steam forums are a mess. It's a serious cesspit of some of the worst people I've ever encountered. It's honestly shocking that Valve lets it be like that. They should just shut it down, IMO.

I hope they'll release on GOG too.
