A break from the usual gaming news to moan about Google for a moment, thanks to their new blog post we have a glimpse of the future of Chrome and it's AI AI AI.
Google say they're about to take a step that will result in "fundamentally changing the nature of browsing" to move from a "passive experience to a more proactive and intelligent one". With that they've announced some major changes will be coming to Chrome.
The first is Gemini, their AI assistant, it's going to be your new "browsing assistant" that will "answer questions about articles, find references within YouTube videos, and will soon be able to help you find pages you’ve visited so you can pick up exactly where you left off" and it will integrate with other Google services.
On top of that they're planning to make "more advanced agentic capabilities for Gemini in Chrome that can perform multi-step tasks for you from start to finish". Difficult things like "booking a haircut" or "ordering your weekly groceries" will be a thing of the past Google hope, as they'll get their AI to do it for you.
Another change will be to the address bar, their "omnibox", as it's going to get "even smarter" with their new AI Mode.
Although, they only mention Windows and macOS for this in the post, no doubt it would come to Linux eventually.

So soon, you'll be told to add glue to pizza right in the address bar in Google Chrome! Because we all know how factually accurate these AI tools are of course, they never ever make things up. And with their AI Mode right in the browser, the idea of course like with AI Mode on Google Search, is to get you to never click away from anything Google. They want you to stay in their products longer, to generate more data and more revenue from you.
Firefox has also started adding in more AI features too, because apparently that's what everyone will be getting whether you like it or not. You simply must become part of the AI machine.
At no point in my entire browsing history have I ever thought - you know what would make this better? AI!
I think it's time I gave Vivaldi another chance, with their commitment to keeping things human.
On the desktop front, when I need Chrome compatibility, I use Vivaldi on both Linux and Windows. I've been gradually moving over to Librewolf in lieu of Firefox on my systems (again, for both OS's) but I have to admit that I still primarily use Firefox on my daily driver laptop. It has all the plugins I prefer installed and it's curated by Linux Mint. Given what I've read here, I may have to accelerate my shift away from Firefox.
In all cases, DuckDuckGo is my default search engine.
I've never heard of Waterfox. How is it compared to Librewolf?
The problem is that so much of the Web is now centered around Chrome, and Google is dictating the architecture of the Web more than W3C or anyone else.Anyone else have a feeling of deja vu?
OpenAIs "agentic browser" is vulnerable to it, but people don't give it all their saved website credentials.
Imagine a website including

Tempting to try some of these new (at least to me) exotic browsers like Brave
But Firefox has always been my favourite, I only switched to chromium and chrome a few years ago because people made fun of me for still using Firefox lol
I asked gemini to put the current AI against the timeline of the Hyperion books.
@Bumadar Stop that. You're not the first person I've seen do this, you probably won't be the last, but you're not making an interesting or valuable contribution to the conversation by using AI to write 3/4 of your comment.
Loyalty is rarely rewarded and if they begin to make the decisions Google has made - I'll move away from them.
Maybe I'm very lucky but I've never seen that kind of websites, so never had to use Chrome in any way.
In my case, I have two sites that force me to use chrome. Both are work related extremely heavy, extremely custom, applications related to audio video processing. They don't even allow Chromium, they require CHROME itself and nothing else. I tried. So I don't use my linux desktop for any of that, I use my macbook and allow chrome to get it's grubby little malware fingers all over it. I just then don't use my macbook for anything personal related at all. It sucks because I would love to use my huge ultrawide monitor for those two apps, instead of a small laptop monitor, but there's zero chance in hell I'm installing chrome on my personal computer. Or anything from google, ever. Oof, I shudder to even think about it. I'd have to wipe and physically take out the m2 and run it over with my vehicle, go buy a new m2 drive, install it, then reflash the os.

Since when it's a good reason?! It's beyond me.
AI reminds me of worship in the past: People attributed messages to inanimate objects like they are sentient beings and followed them blindly, without even thinking about it to often detrimental results. "AI I mean god told me we need to sacrifice people so it rains again!"
