Bethesda have been busy cooking up a massive free update for Starfield called Free Lanes, along with a new DLC named Terran Armada. The update is surprisingly big actually, a lot bigger than I was expecting it to be. They will arrive together on April 7th.

Space travel is actually sounding more interesting now, with the ability to actually fly between planets in a system. Along with a Cruise Mode to let you do everything you can while docked or in orbit, while you're travelling. Plus, plenty of new points of interest and encounters have been added to actually make it worth it too.

There's also a new X-Tech resource, which allows you to customize all of your weapons, gear and ships even more. With various new systems there to work with it and new weapon tiers. Outposts gained a shared container, a new information database and you even get an outpost pet. There's loads more like Starborn Ability upgrades, new ship modules, new quests, a new land vehicle, an asteroid base you can purchase and loads more.

As for the DLC it brings with it a new story and campanion, focused on the Terran Armada that believe they are the "true" children of Earth. Bethesda say they're mostly made up of robotic soldiers. This comes with a new Incursions gameplay system, which are repeatable events where you can expect lots of combat.

"Repeatable events" is the last thing I'd want out of Starfield.

I enjoyed my time in Starfield, but not sure I could stomach going back to it, at least not so soon. For me, it was all about the spaceship designer, and even that was often immensely frustrating because parts were so spread through the various systems.

This does sound pretty cool though, so maybe later in the year.

As one of the five people who actually liked Starfield, I am excited.

Starfield got boring so quickly, but I struggled through to the end. Took way too long, 52 hours.
I couldn't imagine torturing myself with this game again.

same! I made liberal use of the cheat console to fix these idiotic QOL things though. I just made it so that every ship vendor has every part. Aint nobody got time to figure out who has what and fly all over creation trying to find that one part.

I never found the outposts useful at all so I never even used one LOL. I'm not even sure what they were supposed to be used for? There's been so many updates since I played I bet it's totally different now.

I'm with scaine though, I don't think I'll be going back to it. It was fun, but very forgettable and just kinda meh. And I'm their #1 core demographic: scifi loving rpg playing hyperfan.

Spoiler, click me

It also rubbed me SO the wrong way that the starborn ship and post "ending" stuff was SOOOOO BAD. totally completely utterly USELESS. They didn't even finish the ship, like at all! You get it, and your crew is just standing around awkwardly in an empty space staring off into nothing. What? I had not looked up any spoilers, so I had spent the entire game REALLY looking forward to getting a freakin sweet starborn ship and gear, and etc... then I get it and it's just TERRIBLE. Immediately uninstalled the game then.

I really liked starfield. It was buggy, and it had a lot of dumb design choices. The main story was terrible until the last two missions, but the side quests and things were all interesting. I am still not sure which path was the right one with the crimson fleet.
As with anything bethesda a few thousand mods made it pretty good.
So I am sort of excited to see where this goes.

I remember, Starfield came out during a time I didn't keep up with video games and video game news at all. I literally heard of that game for the first time on the same day it was released - in my Steam launcher. Saw that big shiny in-launcher ad, thought "oh, a Bethesda game", downloaded it and absolutely loved it for some 50-60 hours.

Then I looked into the internet about Starfield for the first time and was surprised just how much hate it had garnered. I am pretty sure, had I tried the game with a negative mindset (or with high expectations from someone who waited for it for years), I would have enjoyed it far less or not at all. And I hate that part of me that can be influenced by the opinion of others.

Either way, despite its shortcomings, I will definitely give this update a try. If they somehow fixed the immersion factor of traveling, this would be a huge step into the right direction. The other one would be having more diverse procedural generation, so I could finally have my Daggerfall in space.

Imagine if Bethesda cared about improving their game as much as Hello Games does with No Man's Sky. We'd have a steady stream of free updates that actually make things fun to play.

Bethesda's passion for their games ended long ago. Now it's just about how much cash they can rake in. The kind of support that No Man's Sky received would not be profitable enough.

Bethesda please just let it die and concentrate on TESVI: if you try really hard (and fire Pagliarulo) there is a chance it won't suck...

I loved this game for the side quests, maybe because I'm a literary person who loves a good story. I didn't go in expecting great space combat or anything like that, and maybe that's why I wasn't as disappointed as some people.

It'll be nice to have some new toys if it truly adds a sandbox-type element to space travel. As of now, Everspace 2 is still my favorite freelancer space combat/trading game.
