Defender of the Crown is an absolute classic originally released on the Amiga, and now it's returning with Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns. This is my childhood. I loved my Amiga!
I'm quite impressed by how Black Tower Basement / Nordcurrent Labs are handling this too. The game includes not just the original with a few enhancements, but a fully modernised version and an entirely new way to play. Three different ways to play through it!

Announcing the game revival the developers said:
Hi everyone,
Welcome – and thank you for being here! We’re really glad you stopped by to check out the return of Defender of the Crown!
For our teams, it is both an honor and a privilege to revive this legendary title – a game that captured the imagination of one of the earliest generations of gamers and left a lasting impact on computer gaming history.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original Defender of the Crown. Four decades ago, it stood out as one of the most visually striking and ambitious games of its time. With Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, our goal is to celebrate that legacy while introducing the world of the game to a new generation of players.
Whether you're returning to a beloved classic or discovering it for the first time, we’re very grateful to have you with us at the start of this journey.
The legend returns in 2026 – let’s celebrate together!

The game modes:
- Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
- Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
- Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.
It will even be Steam Deck compatible according to the developer post on the Steam forum.
Even though the C64 version of this game was allegedly superior in gameplay, the Amiga version still started my love affair with Cinemaware. "S.D.I., King of Chicago, IT Came from the Desert, Lords of the Rising Sun, Rocket Ranger, Wings!" I bought everything from them as long as they existed.
Will buy this for certain!🥰
