Mega Crit have a massive success on their hands with the Early Access release of Slay the Spire 2, smashing records across the Steam store. It is now by far the biggest release ever for a game made with the free and open source Godot Engine as well.
I know some out there look down on reports for concurrent player counts for games, but for indie games especially I find it interesting. Especially so in this case, because it's a game series I love. Every time I look, the peak concurrent player count for Slay the Spire 2 has gone up again. At time of writing the newest peak is 306,092 322,852 330,891, which is absolutely incredible.
Looking at SteamDB it has very clearly beaten every other roguelike or deck-builder.
Filtering to Roguelike Deckbuilder the results aren't even close:
And when filtering just to Deckbuilding it has also smashed the record there too:
As I was writing this, the peak count went up repeatedly. Making it also able to dethrone ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN in the Roguelike category
Considering the massive competition every single game release has on Steam with so many releasing all the time it's really pleasing to see such a massive success for a smaller team. Even managing to beat various games by massive publishers and AAA studios is quite a feat. It's even approaching the all-time peak count of Resident Evil Requiem quite quickly too.
The thing is, nothing is ever guaranteed to be a success. Sure, they had the original game which was popular, but that doesn't automatically mean an unfinished sequel will be a smash-hit like this.
Slay the Spire 2 already has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating from Steam users and playing more of the Native Linux version, it has been working amazingly well. Probably one of the best Early Access releases I've played in a while.
