Nintendo 64 emulator gopher64 continue to advance with new versions repeatedly being released, and now it should be easier than ever to use. Only recently they added support for RetroAchievements and now they're back with even more.

v1.1.17 released last week added in:

  • Press F1 to toggle showing FPS (internal game FPS) and VI/S (emulated refresh rate).
  • Added support for opening a ROM by dropping it onto the window.
  • Added option for VSync.
  • Added list of recently opened ROMs.
  • GameBoy RAM is now written back to the save file.
  • Improved transferpak loading (file dialogs appear when you enable a transferpak, not when the game starts).

And after there's been a couple bug-fix releases so it's currently on v1.1.19.

Emulation is simply fantastic for historical game preservation. Nice to see more open source cross-platform emulators like this. Could end up as one of the best ways to play Nintendo 64 games on Linux / SteamOS.

Some notable features that x supports currently includes:

  • Netplay.
  • Homebrew support.
  • Upscaling.
  • CRT shader.
  • Emulate CPU overclocking.
  • Cheats.
  • Savestates.
  • RetroAchievements.
