HELLDIVERS 2 from Arrowhead Game Studios and PlayStation Publishing had a major update released, which broke it on Linux / SteamOS systems but Valve fixed it.
Part of the problem of relying on a translation layer like Proton to run Windows games, is that at times live-service type games will just break with it. Although, that's partly a problem of the game developer not testing updates on Linux / SteamOS to ensure they work.
The HELLDIVERS 2 update resulted in Linux players seeing this:
We've seen this type of thing so many times - but Valve again to the rescue. Developer Pierre-Loup Griffais posted on Bluesky to note: "A Proton Hotfix has been deployed to address the launch failure with Helldivers 2".
Pretty impressive turnaround on the Proton update timing, with the update for Proton Hotfix landing the same day that the update for HELLDIVERS 2 was released.
Hopefully when the Steam Machine eventually releases, we might see more game developers actually test properly before pushing out an update that breaks it. Valve end up playing a lot of catch-up to fix all these issues, which won't exactly be too acceptable on a living room console styled system. Valve won't always be able to fix up games so rapidly.
Proton Hotfix is now set as the default for HELLDIVERS 2, and should grab it and update it for you when you go to launch it, although you may need to reload Steam if you haven't recently for it to be picked up properly. I've tested, and can confirm it does indeed work properly again:
