Installing Linux on a PlayStation 5 gets even easier now, with recent updates expanding the firmware versions that are supported. A great thing for preservation, as eventually all companies move on - and you should be able to do whatever you want with hardware you've purchased.
Over the last day the developers have hooked up support for firmware versions 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50, 6.00 and 6.02. Massively expanding who can actually use it. Still requires the original bigger "phat" PlayStation 5 model though. From the GitHub page:
ps5-linux leverages a patched HV vulnerability to transform your PS5 Phat console running 3.00-6.02 firmwares into a highly capable Linux PC, unlocking its full hardware potential for desktop use. Powered by 8 CPU cores (16 threads) at 3.5 GHz and a GPU at 2.23 GHz, it provides enough performance to run Steam games and various emulators with impressive fluidity. It supports HDMI 4K60 video and audio output. Furthermore, it allows you to utilize an M.2 SSD as a dedicated Linux partition, as well as all USB ports on the console.
So right now it's supported on:
- 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 without M.2 support
- 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 with M.2 support
- 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 with M.2 support
- 6.00, 6.02 with M.2 support
They're still saying that "Support for 1.xx and 2.xx firmwares may be added in the future, but we will not prioritize this effort" and that firmware versions higher than 6.50 will not be supported.
Pretty awesome work to see keep getting better. There's also now a working driver for the internal marvell wlan chip.

Running Linux requires a hypervisor jailbreak that was patched in firmware 6.50, deployed in january 2023.
So you need a phat PS5 that hasn't been updated in a while. Users apparently are forced to update to play some newer games, and can't go back and downgrade.
