Valve announced a whole bunch of changes to Steam tags with plenty removed and added, along with settling the score on what to call Vampire Survivor-likes.

They said:

"Today we've made some changes to the set of official store tags available on Steam, adding 17 new tags, removing 28, and merging/updating a handful of others. These changes are made with the goal of helping players identify the games that best fit their interests, and helping Steam generate appropriate recommendations.

Each year, we typically add a few new tags based on community feedback, but it has been a while since we last did so (Most recently in 2024 when we added Dice, Dwarf, Boomer Shooter, and Elf tags). In the time since, we've built up a list of tags to add, remove, and update."

The new tags are:

  • Bullet Heaven - The opposite of Bullet Hell; Focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies
  • Desktop Companion - Games that only use part of your screen and keep you company while you do other things
  • Organizing - Tidy up, de-clutter, or unpack, carefully placing items in virtual spaces
  • Cleaning - Satisfying removal of grime and dirt from stuff
  • Decorating - Creative placement of furniture and other objects
  • Wuxia - Historical fantasy adventure featuring martial arts, competing sects, and inner qi
  • Xianxia - Fantasy adventure focused on cultivating supernatural powers and strength
  • Falling Blocks - Arranging, rotating, and placing blocks from above
  • Espionage - Spying or secretly securing valuable intel
  • Samurai - Japanese warriors best known for katanas, loyalty, and self-discipline
  • Zoo - Care for and display a park full of wild animals
  • Wolves - Also known as Canis Lupus
  • Capybaras - The largest and possibly most adorable rodent species
  • Animals - Cute and furry, or large and terrifying and everything in between
  • Cult - Small groups with extreme devotion to a person, thing, or belief
  • Poker - Draw, bet, and bluff
  • Language Learning - Learning and teaching new languages

This firmly settles the argument on what to call the games inspired by Vampire Survivor that exploded on Steam. I wrote back in December 2025 here on GamingOnLinux that one developer of a popular version had run a poll and settled on Bullet Heaven, and other developers have since jumped in to use the same so it's nice to see that argument sorted more firmly now. It's pretty hard to go against Steam once a category is there - so might as well be the true official category now.

We have so many in that now genre it's nuts. My most recent favourite being TerraTech Legion. But there's so many other good picks like Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, Megabonk, Yet Another Zombie Survivors, Deadly Days: Roadtrip, Nautical Survival and many other total gems.

Valve also removed a bunch of tags as well:

  • 3D Vision
  • Ambient
  • America
  • Blood
  • Crowdfunded
  • Cult Classic
  • Documentary
  • Drama
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • Electronic
  • Experience
  • Feature Film
  • Foreign
  • GameMaker
  • Games Workshop
  • Illuminati
  • Kickstarter
  • LEGO
  • Masterpiece
  • Mature
  • Movie
  • Narration
  • NSFW
  • Roguevania
  • RPGMaker
  • Warhammer 40K
  • Web Publishing
  • Well-Written

And some that were modified:

  • "Clicker" has been renamed into "Incremental" to capture the broader essence of games that focus on numbers going up.
  • "Conversation" has been renamed to "Dialogue Heavy" for clarity
  • We've made a few tags plural to match other tags: Dogs, Foxes, Vampires, Elves, Dwarves, and Assassins
  • "Pool" was humorously applied to games with a swimming pool, so we've renamed this to "Billiards", which is the overarching term for all games played with cue sticks anyway
  • Merging "Jet" into "Flight", as the term "Jet" was not unique enough.
  • Merging "Unforgiving" into "Difficult" since these terms mostly overlap in usage and intent

What do you think to all these changes? Any you're really happy with? Any you're not happy with? Leave a comment and let us know.

I don't quite understand some of them.
For example: Why remove "Warhammer 40k" as a tag?

I would assume because Warhammmer is not a genre, it's an IP.

They can arrange and rearrange all they want, at the end of the day the tags are applied by the community, so I will probably continue to find them thoroughly useless.

Seems like a good list of changes to me.

It'll always be "horde-survival" to me!!

I do agree with other comments that the tags are often useless. I tried to find a good RPG for the train today, I was hit with things like Borderlands 4, which might be technically "role playing", but not really what I would associate with that tag.

Steam removing NSFW and mature tags, because audience is not adult.
Sure Gabe, you're not an adult so am I not, also.

There's a developer content flag system that's independent of the user tags.

They generaly removed tags that are IPs. Also, Warhammer games are already really upfront about what they are in the title ;)

Considering the removal of LEGO, Dungeons & Dragons and Games Workshop, I guess it's a push to "de-brandize" tags, remove IP/trademarked terms, and go in a more general direction than referencing other companies or specific products.

Why did they remove Lego? That tag was genuinely useful

Gamers often have no idea about Genres. Something that contains roleplay elements (as character building via skills and equipment) becomes "RPG" for some people. Even developers/publishers have this issue. Horizon Zero Dawn is no RPG (as Sony claims it) but an Action Adventure.

I guess they don't want to get legal issues with Lego as some YouTubers for wrong labeling. 😅 Relabeling as [Building Blocks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_blocks_(toy)) would probably be the right way.

My guess is LEGO didn't like non-licensed games tagged with LEGO (can't blame them for that).
All LEGO games have LEGO in the title, so the tag didn't make sense anyway.

TFW I'm searching for new [logic](https://store.steampowered.com/search/?tags=6129) games and get [this](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3743420/Real_Estate_Simulator_2/) or [this](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3355800/Bank_Simulator/)...

I personally do like Bullet Heaven as a tag for the VS-likes. Because, yeah, those games do make you feel like you are the danmaku boss instead of the other way around.

it will overlap with games that have horde survival mode, but without mechanics of bullet-heaven.

Mostly reasonable changes as far as I can tell.

However, I'd like them to flesh out dynamic collections in the library by allowing OR tag matching instead of just AND matching the way it currently works. Maybe even allow excluding certain tags. Manual overrides by dragging games into or out of a collection should keep working of course.

For example, you could then combine 'cozy', 'relaxing', 'wholesome', and similar tags in one dynamic collection.

Most seem sensible, and I did not now Elves already existed since dwarves were added.

Desktop Companion - Games that only use part of your screen and keep you company while you do other things
Here my only reservation is to exclude from the definition Fullscreen games. I see many like Cast & Chill which has the tag already, or lofi-girl-likes study apps that use the whole screen state and are definitely used as desktop companions, like 2nd screen monitor

I see they've gone with Tolkien on the pluralization of "dwarf". 😁 (Which makes sense, given the games using that tag…)

Yeah, the release had this paragraph about it:
And lastly, there are a number of tags that apply to specific intellectual property, an attribute that community-sourced information like tags is not well suited for. These collections of intellectual property are typically already covered by the developers and publishers setting up franchise pages to collect together officially all the content shared by that IP.
