Check out what anti-cheat enabled games work on Linux / SteamOS on our dedicated anti-cheat compatibility page.

Utopia Must Fall from Pixeljam is pretty magnificent, it's a true quality arcade shoot 'em up that I thoroughly enjoy that just got a nice big upgrade. I feel like it needs a lot more eyes on it, a game that deserves more purchases and players.

It's such a glorious retro-modern mixture. You have to defend humanity's last surviving metropolis from mysterious aliens in a base-defence arcade shooter with roguelite upgrade mechanics and progression. Utopia Must Fall is like the ultimate version of Defender /Space Invaders meets Asteroids. It's one heck of a light show once you get into it - and it really can be challenging, it will force your brain into wanting one more run before you go to bed.

Covered on GamingOnLinux back in May 2025, it's only gotten better since then. A new update for it landed June 4th, which expanded the upgrade system to give you even more choices as you blast through it. Do check out the fancy new trailer:

The newest additions to the game include:

Opportunity Upgrades & Meta Progression

  • OUs are 'wildcard' upgrades that apply unique modifications to your city, weapons, outposts and drones
  • OUs need to be unlocked with XP earned after each apocalypse, and are then permanently added to the pool (meta progression)
  • OUs will be offered randomly in the 8 vacant wildcard slots at the center of the tech tree
  • If taken, the OUs occupy the slot for the rest of the run, meaning a maximum of 8 OUs can be combined in a run

Weapons, Enemies, Balance & Polish

  • There are now a total of 4 base weapon trees, with multiple sub branches / modifiers and build synergies
  • A host of new enemies and attack wave styles have been added, including a new boss lurking around in week 5
  • Difficulty balance and attack wave design has been overhauled to create a smoother curve for new players while still being challenging for experienced players in later weeks
  • All round improvements in UI polish, visual effects, gamepad compatibility, engine performance and sound effects
  • Expanded soundtrack with new additions from Miles Tilmann and Datassette

As a testament to just how good it is, I only loaded it up initially to ensure it continued working in Proton and for a quick up to date screenshot and ended up blasting through over an hour in it again. It's just delicious.

After reading the first article in GoL, I purchased Utopia Must Fall. My play time has been 100% on the Steam Deck, where the game worked flawlessly. I was surprised that a retro arcade game could be so visually pleasing and have so depth. The options available for postponing the alien invasion are very creative. Each day you survive the alien onslaught you can a new choose upgrade for the next day. While standard options like weapon and shield enhancements are available; you can also use nukes, drones, robots, illicit arms deals, enforced blackout hours, etc. My favorite option is to invite the aliens to lunch. For people that enjoyed games like Galaxian or Missile Command, this game is a must buy.
