1001st Hyper Tower from developer Toster12D3 is out on Steam in Early Access, it seems to have some interesting action and the developer provided me with a key to check it out.

1001st Hyper Tower is a rogue-lite first-person shooter set in Arabian Cyberpunk world.
It's all about very fast and highly vertical gameplay. Crawl the Dungeon Climb the Tower and encounter unique enemies with cunning behaviour. Everything is procedurally generated and completely destructible. It’s easy to wander around, hard to get lost. The only right direction is upward. But the way you climb is up to you.

While I like the idea of 1001st Hyper Tower, the Linux version really isn't running very well at all. The training seemed to be okay and everything was pretty normal. Well, as normal as the incredible bizarre world in 1001st Hyper Tower is. Sadly though, once you get into the full game the performance is absolutely terribly. We're talking often sub-30FPS and it's just not playable.

Performance isn't the only problem. It seems to be using an older version of Unity, I can tell since in fullscreen the menu has no mouse-click input (but it works in windowed mode) which was a common bug quite some time ago that was fixed in the Unity game engine.

Since we have Steam Play as an option, I decided to try that too and while fullscreen worked as normal performance was exactly the same.

I've reported the issues to the developer, so hopefully it will be quickly sorted. I like the idea and style to it and it did seem like it could be good, so I will take another look in future after some updates.

Kinda looks like a basic Blendo Games game! well its a nice idea, hope they get performance fixed and some polish on it! Its a neat idea with the tower climbing for sure.

Y'know, I remember when I first heard about this game. It was here on GoL. It was received well enough, but there was a general agreement that the sound effects we were hearing were decidedly sub-par. Someone from the dev team took the time to join the discussion and, not only explain that the sound fx were just "placeholders" but that they would be improved post-haste because of our reaction.

Anytime a dev "drops in" on a discussion here on GoL, I'm impressed. It's one thing to see devs jump into discussions on Reddit. I assume they're registered there as a matter of course, part of media outreach. But GoL is niche, and when I see that a dev takes the time to register here just to join in our discussion about his or her game, I know that I'm seeing a dev that really cares what the Linux community is thinking/saying about a game.

I feel confident that the performance issues Liam mentions will be sorted out before the final release, because I feel that the devs care about their project and what we Linux gamers think. Frankly, I'm pretty excited about the potential of this game!
