'Ballistic Overkill' [Steam] is currently one of my favourite online FPS games and it has just been updated with a new user interface, a new class and more! It's still as cheap as ever, go get it.

With the big new update, my major complaint about the game has been solved. You can now adjust all settings while actually in a game, so you don't need to quit to the menu anymore.

The new class named "Marksman" is an assault weapons and sniper specialist, which is pretty fun to play as.

Along with those major additions, it has also gone through another balancing effort.

The game is a class-based online FPS, with some pretty nice maps, class customization, different game modes and fantastic performance. It's also seriously cheap, which makes it even more attractive.

It's still in Early Access, but don't let that deter you on this one!

The big question is: How's the community on this game? Are there many players online today? Will there be many players the coming months?

Since I first discovered it and wrote about it back in June I have never had an issue finding a game, when I tested the new update last night plenty of servers were full. Has a small community, but dedicated community.

Sigh... I guess modern FPS' have classes now where you deploy with weapon-sets and don't have to strategically acquire and guard weapon spawns on a map.

Totally different mechanically from Halo, and of course old Unreal Tournament had lots of little mechanics that made the game fun.

The Secret to Fun? Game Mechanics, not 10 billion classes or a hundred million units or variations of procedural generated weapons. Maybe worlds but not weapons.

Different people, different tastes :)

I really like class based stuff, so I have a custom loadout tailored to my own tastes.

I tried this game but it has a serious flaw and I requested my $ back and got it. The safe rooms during battles. If a team is in the lead and time is running out - they just stay in their safe area free from getting fragged and spam nades out of the door as the losing team tries get some frags. I had that happen to me in more then 3 games and I had to tap out.

You say modern as if this is a new idea. Team Fortress predates Halo and Unreal, your two examples, and is a class based shooter.

The game is region locked. Not available in Russia. 0/10 do not recommend.

Speaking of that! How's the new Unreal game doing? They've been working on it a long time now haven't they?

Modern fps are more accessible. Remembering when armour spawns is HARD. I want to use rail gun all the time and when someone else takes it I am sad. I want to shoot people, not THINK. Thinking is hard. Skill? Tactics? Ugh.

Notice the context of my comment - particularly games ranging from 1999 - 2007. Super Mario Bros from 1987 could be more fun than a modern side scroller because of good mechanics executed well.

I download it from their forum and it's extremely awesome and fun. The only problem is that every time I want to play I have to manually patch the game.

it's still lacks a proper fucking launcher/updater on Linux, i'm seriously thinking about using wine for it.
