How SteamOS could become a better console competitor

SteamOS is the console OS from Valve to turn PCs into consoles, but with PC things you love such as the ability to mod and use PC software. But it puts them in an easy to use package with a controller on the TV and removes some hassle that operating systems like Windows, Mac, Ubuntu (or other Linux distributions with a desktop GUI) and FreeBSD includes.

ESSENCE is a surreal first-person exploration adventure which had me mesmerized when I first saw it on Kickstarter last year. It's back on the crowdfunding platform with a prototype, and there are also a few other campaigns there worth a look.

Considering AMD are in the middle of producing a brand new driver for Linux, it's not surprising they don't have Vulkan ready for Linux right from day one. Still, a shame for anyone on AMD hoping to test things out.

A pretty major Steam Client Beta just landed, and with it comes hardware accelerated encoding for In-Home Streaming on Nvidia with Linux, and you can also now configure the Steam Controller for desktop mode (including using the big picture overlay when launching from the desktop client).

Amazon launches Lumberyard, a free game engine that will support Linux and have source access

Amazon dropped a bit of a big one recently, they announced Lumberyard which will be a mix of code from CryEngine, Double Helix and you can get source code access with it too.

ARK: Survival Evolved devs throwing money at BattlEye for Linux support, good news for Arma 3 too

Sad news for players of ARK: Survival Evolved as it now uses BattlEye for online play, but the great news is the developers of ARK have confirmed BattlEye is coming to Linux and they are throwing money to help it happen. This will also be good news for Arma 3 players.

I've heard reports far and wide that the Linux to Linux multiplayer in Dying Light is broken. Myself and Samsai tried to connect to each other many times and it failed every time, lets get it fixed.

Valve rep mentions they will eventually survey Big Picture & SteamOS

Currently Steam Big Picture mode and SteamOS don't get a hardware survey, so even if millions of people pick up a Steam Machine we won't currently see any changes in the Steam Hardware Survey, but that could change in future.
