Starsector previously known as Starfarer is a game I have been following since early 2011 and I am glad to say it's still being fully worked on. Starsector is an open-world single-player space-combat, roleplaying, exploration and economic game.

Contested Space is one of the more interesting titles to appear recently, I've played around with it and it's actually pretty fun, especially fun is designing your own ships.

There seems to be a lot of "x Simulator" games coming out recently. Tabletop Simulator aims to simulate a ton of different board-games with some funny results.

It's all well and good us having "SuperTuxKart", but KartSim looks fantastic and aims to be much more realistic. With great graphics, sounds and customization!

Infectonator Survivors is a Randomized Permadeath Survival Simulator that combines RTS, Tower Defence, Roguelike, and Management-Simulation gameplay. Currently in Steam's Early Access and it caught my eye, luckily the developers told me they have plans for Linux.
